I am new to this forum. I purchased a 2017 Volt in Sept. Car runs fine. I have and am worried about all those volts stalling while at highway speed. Nothing good can come from that. I have had 2 incidents with my Volt.

2 weeks ago, the cruise control would not engage no matter how hard I tried, until it finally did.

Yesterday, while driving, of course, the following message popped up on the DIC: 'Engine maintenance in progress' below that message there was a progress indicator that ran from 1% to 100%. it took about 20 minutes for the maintenance to complete. The car shown no noticeable change in behavior during the maintenance.

I talked to a service representative today at my dealership. He did not know what the message meant. He told that a circular/advisory went out a few days earlier about and OTA upgrade. He did not know anything beyond that.

Anybody has heard about such a thing? I was not aware that the Volt could be upgraded on the fly. Why would the engine go into maintenance mode while in motion? Puzzled by the whole thing.

Have you used the gas engine (ICE) or have you been running in electric (normal) mode all the time? If the ICE has not been used then about once a month the Volt will automatically run it for about 15 minutes, but my 17 gave a warning and I had the option to proceed or not with that maintenance procedure. When I did indicate to proceed while sitting in the garage, it did wait until a block away to start the ICE. I watched the flow display to see when it started and stopped. Check the manual.

Engine Maintenance Mode (EMM) will happen every 6 weeks if the ICE has not run during that time. It will pop up a message on the center screen and ask if you want to delay it for 24 hours. You only get the option for one delay.
Only Onstar can do OTA upgrades. Of course that is only to the Onstar software. GM does not do OTA upgrades.

Congratulations on your first post to the forum.

Not sure what you are saying here. It wouldn't engage and then it did?

That is a message that the Volt is making sure the engine is maintained in good condition by running for a few minutes to keep thing well lubricated and happy.

I talked to a service representative today at my dealership. He did not know what the message meant. He told that a circular/advisory went out a few days earlier about and OTA upgrade. He did not know anything beyond that.
Not unusual for service reps at dealerships to have no idea how the Volt works. If you don't trust the service department to understand the Volt, then find a new dealership.

Reading the owner's manual will answer many questions. I've read it 3 times and I still have questions that get answered by checking back again and again.

get the electronic PDF version of the manual so you can search for key words.

there is a lower speed limit where cruise control may not work and I have never tried it in reverse :)

That lower limit is in the mid 20's. Though I wish I could set cruise to 20 mph at times, especially in stop and go traffic.

Thanks for the quick replies. I have not used the ICE engine at all since purchase. I wanted to use battery power for as long as possible. So nothing to worry about. OK good to know
Find a new dealership. Any so-called Volt mechanic who doesn't know about EMM, which is basic stuff in the owners manual, is someone to avoid.
