My take on alternative fuel / propulsion vehicles has always been that it is an opportunity to make automobiles better and introduce greater variety. You no longer need incumbent automakers giving you the same bland, vanilla cars to keep you in your societal place, but you can now explore interesting new configurations, like the Aptera or leaning trikes, or electric scooters / motorcycles. You can have amazing performance vehicles with fuel cells, ultra caps and 4 in wheel motors.
Tesla, Fisker and GM have it right - consumers know what they need / want, and these companies intend to deliver it in whatever configuration the consumer can afford, while working to cost reduce them in the following years.
