I calculated that I spent more when I used Charge Point than the cost of gas. However, it let me park at the front of the giant lot at Disney World, so it was still worth it. The maintenance probably makes it financially beneficial to charge at home in almost every US location.

Since we are NOT socialist (yet)...but somewhat of a welfare state there is some corruption. Yet, I guess we can't call it corruption because there generally haven't been such findings in a court of law for those in power. Without convictions, no corruption,,,yes???

I don't think that such lack of findings of corruption can go on for much longer. That's just my sense of things.
All is well in the socialist.. sorry.. welfare state where there is no corruption. The police dropped the investigation (of the lady involved with the party who is making legislation for government subsidies on electric bikes) on the grounds that there was no crime involved since the lady did not have possibility to influence city of Helsinki electric bike purchases. Great that they sorted that mishap out.

Luckily for the electric bike manufacture (who gave that free bike), the government now passed a tax exempt law for company provided bikes in order to reduce co2 emissions by replacing commute with a bike. Company can provide an employee either a company owned or a leased bike for tax free. Employee can also request such bike lease and pay if from the salary tax free (in effectively reducing the overall taxable salary). Lease buyout would also be tax free.

I'm also happy to take that offer and send my money to a company in Germany (and not to the Finnish company who gave the non-corruption free bike), although I'll use it at home, not for commuting.

Another update from socialist.. sorry.. welfare state where there is no corruption.

The head of government expenditure inspection agency got into news on what seems to be case of spending government money for own expenses. Additionally the agency visits to luxury resorts.. sorry cultural exchange and education sites got some questioning in the news papers. Similarly top officials changing wording on reports on government spending to support government officials decisions on the spending raised some eyebrows. The head of agency was suspended and police is currently investigating. I am quite sure that they will clear all these blatant lies after which the head of agency can return to the position and arrange further cultural exchange visits which are on hold at the moment.

Other news tells that the prime ministers support staff have made a gross error and have been paying the food bills of prime ministers family. Totally without a request, knowledge or understanding of the prime minister. Luckily the sum has been small about 15k€ so this kind of mishap can be understood. Our law abiding prime minister has informed that there is no issue and PM is willing to pay it all back from own pocket, as people should buy their own groceries anyway. Police is currently investigating and will clear the issue as soon as the fuss subdues. For some reason the tax administration is also investigating the mishap.

But all in all, all is well as our PM got on the front pages of Times, Mujer Hoy and what else.

Oh... our PM made it to news around the world. I'm sure they're just repeating the slander.

"Cereal offender"

"l'Aamiaisgate"

Politico

Reference to Wedding is the odd 23k€ catering bill from the same day as PM's wedding.

P.S. It was 850€ (or 1000$/month) for breakfast expenses.

Well The electric company in CT turned around and stuck it up our backsides. Doubling the cost of just bring electricity to our homes example if you have $100 in electrical generation charge you will have a delivery charge of $200 for a total of $300 dollars. My wife is kicking herself because I wanted to go solar 5 years ago but she said it was ugly and they are but not as ugly as the bill we just got.

Anyways charging the volt now cost me 0.21 cents per kilowatt ish I know my old volt was 10kw but I'm not 100% sure what the 2018 is.

Anyways I am most likely still going to be charging my care but I'm more saving the planet than saving my wallet.

what do you guys think or do?
I will stop complaining about my 6.7cents/kWh now

All is well again in the socialist.. sorry.. welfare state where there is no corruption.

Tax agency informed that there is no legal grounds for the PM to enjoy free breakfast. Our PM immediately informed that the taxes for this undue benefit will be paid! After that PM also informed that the whole 15k€ will be paid back.

Paying both the tax and repaying the "loan", which would remove the need to pay the tax altogether, of course has nothing to do with the double penalty laws where paying the undue and raised tax removes the possibility for a criminal case as noted in the Finnish tax laws. So for the 15k€ breakfast "loan" the PM will end up paying 15k€ for the buffet and about 9k€ for the tax man and thus avoids any further consequences.

Just shows how out law system, when properly utilized, removes all traces of corruption and we can live in corruption free country.

KNI, I thoroughly enjoy your very rational observation of life <grins>. On a more serious note, what has humanity become? Too many humans who are too close together, warping our civilized selves? Somewhere in my past, I recall reading an article that described rat colonies that became overcrowded to the point where the rats began attacking each other. Are we becoming those rats?

Right now, early adopters are enjoying the benefits of cheap electricity. It's unfortunate that your distributor is overcharging you. You can switch your supplier but unfortunately you're stuck with the people that runs the powerline.

Many of us live in a free market economy driven by supply and demand. Gasoline is driven by this principle and so is electricity. Once everyone has no choice but to drive electric cars, you will see a significant increase in your utility bill. This is why I'm against any government favoring and mandating a particular energy source in a free market. You can run your home furnace on whale blubber for all I care. We need choices and competition.

I know there are numerous sources for making electricity -- sun, wind, wave, geothermal, hydro generators, nuclear, etc. But many of those are also creating massive ecological damage. Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Three Gorges Dam to name a few.

If you think electricity is run by supply and demand, you need to rethink this. Utilities are so regulated they may as well be part of most governments.

Three Mile Island had zero release of radiation into the environment.

That makes it even worse. If the government is forcing everyone to use electric cars and if they regulate electricity cost then they can increase the price to whatever amount they want.

Why would "they", the government, want to increase electricity prices above the bare minimum needed to maintain the integrity of the supply of electricity?

And further, why would the government inhibit the growth of electric cars by increasing the cost of fuel??? Wouldn't that be evidence of schizophrenia?

The government is always on the look out for easy revenue. Like hybrid car registration surcharges or pulling money from social security program for other causes. What would stop them from adding more taxes if they can get away with it?

What revenue? Do governments own the electric service where you live? Because they sure don't in Wisconsin. Generation and power transmission are handled by commercial entities barely throttled by legislation limiting price increases.

I started out saying that once demand for electricity increases, the price will go up and I was told in this post that electricity is highly regulated and therefore isn't subjected to supply and demand.

Is anyone else not following this? I feel like this is basic stuff that anyone paying an electric bill should already know. Well, maybe not for people living in Texas because the whole idea of "oversight" seems to be a subversive concept there.

Electric company generates power. Government oversight agency decides how much electric company is allowed to charge and and when and under what circumstances that can change, and that combination of rates, dates, and states of being is collectively known as "the tariffs". Where I live that agency is the Wisconsin Public Service Commission. WPSC doesn't get the money when rates go up, the companies that supply the electricity get the money. WPSC only oversees the whole process. Rates only go up when they say. It is illegal for Madison Gas & Electric, WE Energies, or any other power company to charge anything outside of what's authorized in the tariffs. If any of those utilities companies want to charge more, they can't just change the price. They have to apply to WPSC and ask to have the tariff changed, and prove why they need it to happen or WPSC will turn them down.

What would stop the utility company from charging $200 delivery fee as stated by the OP in other area of the country?
The oversight committee in CT seemed to think it was justified and allowed it to happen. So, who's watching the oversight committee?

Back to the original question - my threshold for gas vs. electric occurs when the battery is exhausted and all I have left is gas.

You can ask them. But they're not the ones getting the $200 either. Here's the listing of the various components of distribution charges that CTs regulatory agencies have allowed. Electricity
