DISGRUNTLED VOLT OWNERS THREAD

I bought my Chevy 2012 Chevy Volt in May of 2012. Other than the gas mileage, I have hated this car almost from the get-go. It's been in the dealership so many times for service I have lost count. I've had 3 flat tires in a year. This past "engine light issue" has had my Volt in the shop most of June, and in fact the dealership has had it this 4th time in a month for over 2 weeks. I just recently learned that I had passed the "30 Day Cumulative" requirement for # of days in shop and now qualify for "The Lemon Law" here in Arizona. This is the first car that I have ever owned that I have not liked. I am kicking myself for having traded in a 2010 Chevy Avalanche that I dearly loved for a VOLT simply because I wanted to stop spending so much on gas. Yes, the VOLT achieved that...but at what other costs?

My question is --- Is anyone else here a "Disgruntled Volt Owner"?????

My Volt is just about 4 months old and it has been thus far on of my favorite vehicles to date. I've had no issues thus far, luckily. I feel for you on having engine/maintenance light issues but flats, that can happen to any car not just the Volt.
Is your Volt Adviser aware of all your issues?

I live 40 miles SE of you and I've had absolutely zero issues with my 2013. I love my Volt.
You must have one of the very few bad Volts.
You are in the minority. I love my 2013 Volt and would only trade it for a Tesla Model S.
I have driven over 7,00 miles in 7 months on 1.4 gallons of gas and have had no issues.
Call the Volt hotline and let them know how you feel and that you want a another Volt since you got one of the few lemons.
If you don't like the car and you qualify for the Lemon Law return, give it back. A number of Leaf owners in AZ did the same because of early battery degradation. I'm at 2+ years and absolutely zero issues so I'm not a disgruntled owner. Given how well the Volt scores in customer satisfaction I'm doubtless more typical but there is always an exception to every rule. Sorry it had to be you.
If you got a lemon, and it looks like you may have, get rid of it. There haven't been a lot of bad Volts but it looks like you were unlucky. I have had my Volt for just 4 weeks and had just one issue, a CEL which was my own fault for hitting a L2 charger button several times instead of waiting for the green light. I love my car and it is the best car I have ever owned in 33 years.
Having been in your shoes with a Honda Accord several years ago, even after a bunch of problems were fixed and the car seemed to work adequately, I no longer trusted my car to function and that is not a vehicle you want to have. And that was when Accords were supposed to be the reliability kings.
Sorry to hear about your misfortunes Todd. I can assure you your experience is not representative of the average Volt owners ownership experience. In fact, as others have pointed out the Volt has the highest owner satisfaction rating of ALL passenger cars.

You probably just got a lemon unfortunately. Every car has them and somebody has to be the unlucky folks that get them, unfortunately it may be you this time. If I were you, I'd use the Lemon law to get a brand new Volt, but I understand if you fell like it's not the right car for you anymore based on your experience. However I urge you to consider doing just that. I'm pretty sure you'll be very happy with a new one, as most all Volt owners are.
Volt No 1 - only issue after 20,000 + miles was an over-torqued brake light that was fixed in the first week of ownership.

Volt No. 2 - after 5,800 miles, had a dash rattle and windshield noise that was fixed and a check engine light that was diagnosed and fixed.

Volt No. 3 (Dad's Volt) - after nearly 4,000 miles, no issues.

Every line of cars has a few bad apples. When I had my issues with Volt No. 2, both my servicing dealership, my Volt Advisor and GM were extremely helpful and bent over backwards to address the problems.
The tires, made by Goodyear, I don't think you can dump on GM... The other issues sound troubling and I hope you get them worked out.

I bought my 2012 Volt one month after you. I suspect my Volt is the most abused Volt on the planet (watch my video at the link on my signature, and you'll see me running down dirt roads, but you won't see me hauling livestock feed out into the pasture on my farm, which I do, because my Volt is a lot more fun to drive than my pickup, which is better for hauling stuff in....) I'm about to bust passed 16,000 miles, have only used 6.7 gallons of gas the whole time... and the real problem I have is I can't understand why in God's Green Earth, more folks out here in my neck of the woods are not jumping on this "electric band wagon..." My gas guzzling pickup and van were (at the height of gas prices in 2008) costing my near $40 per round trip between two properties I own, nearly a 90 mile trip, and now I'm doing the same trip for $2 in my Volt (although I drive like a little old lady, when in fact I am a portly old man) and the other "problem" I have is this silly looking grin all the time. My wife tells me I look like an Irish Setter riding in the back of a truck, because I have this odd smile I can't get rid of, and sometimes I drool. (Drooling is probably cause I am too cheap to run the AC most of the time...)

My Volt is a "Zero-issues" car except for a faulty key fob and a few flats, but hey, we have cactus on the farm, and even I can't fault Goodyear on that.

I hope you are able to resolve your problem. My Volt is the finest car I've ever owned, and I have owned a mess of fine cars.

Thank you ALL for the Responses

I'm encouraged to hear that pretty much ALL of you are loving your vehicle and that I am in the minority. I guess I just had the misfortune of getting a lemon. My Volt has had one problem after another --- mostly all electrical issues --- the last time it had to be towed in. It has 16,000 miles. They warned me when I bought the car that the tires weren't the best because they were special tires to keep the weight down --- so, of course, I bought the tire insurance, which I found out is of no good if your tire goes flat on Easter Sunday and the dealership is closed.

Since they have had my VOLT almost 3 weeks this time, of course I have bitched to anyone who would listen at the dealership and at GM. They sent some guy from Detroit to Scottsdale last week to look at my car, and I was told he took a bunch of data back to the Volt team in Detroit to analyze. Regardless, at this point I do not want this car back. I think I deserve a new Volt. I feel like this one is tainted and I've lost over a month of driving it while in the shop almost the entire month of June. I am suppose to receive a call from GM at 7:30am Tuesday morning. I will let you all know how it works out. I'm hoping GM does the right thing so that this disgruntled Volt customer can become a happy one.

More than year and all those problems and this is your first post? Lots of knowledgeable people here -- some better than dealers. Maybe we can help.

Well I guess its possible you have a lemon, but volts have very high satisfaction and high reliability according to places like true delta. Like most I love mine and have had no real problems. (I did have a flat from a pothole which is goodyears issue not GM).
I've got two Volts, and both have been reliable, solid cars. The Crystal Red one had a rattle that I had fixed early on, and the White Diamond developed a coolant leak, possibly due to the battery customer enhancement. The dealer has taken great care of me, and having a Volt Advisor is the icing on the cake. Other than that, miles of smiles, to borrow another member's phrase.

Good luck, and hopefully GM will make it right for you.
Over 2 years on one and about 20 months on the other, no major issues, and the couple of things that did happen we're fixed the same day.
Hi-

Mr. Venice-

Thomas J. Thias of Sundance Chevrolet Inc. Grand Ledge, Michigan.

I care greatly about my Volt Owner Base in Michigan. They know that they can call me any hour of the day or night. You can as well even for a minor question on operations or other.

I now have over 18,000 miles on my MY2012. I have used only 18 gallons of gas- without issue!

As the Chevy Volt Salesman I will do a VIN Look up on your Volt and see where things went wrong.

Please post the last 8 symbols of your VIN.

This will bring up your Volts complete service history.

Your personal, private information is NOT included in this data dump.

Best-

Geez...so what has your Volt Advisor told you??...You have contacted your Volt Advisor, haven't you?

You obviously have the patience of JOB, because I'd have been on this or another Volt site before now...:(
Sorry to hear that Todd, My wife and I have 2 Volt since May 2012 and we haven't been back to the dealer or any issue yet. We have completely zero problem with our 2 volt.
Wow, that sucks. I, too, traded in my Volt for a car that I absolutely loved, but I have no regrets about doing so. The Volt has literally saved me thousands of dollars just in the first year that I've owned it, and the only problems I've had thus far are tire related (and could have happened with any tire). Hope this works out for you, but you aren't likely to find many Volt owners who have shared your experiences.
Over 30k miles and no flats, no electronic issues. The car has been rock solid for me.
Obviously, you'll be hard pressed to find even a 'slightly dislikes' Volt owner much less one with these ongoing issues.

I'm personally extremely satisfied with my Volt.
I love mine and have had zero defects. Oh one, there were some scratches on the gear shift, so it was replaced. I love driving it and have burned 26 gallons in 8,000 miles. My electric cost is about 1.2 cents/mile in the summer and 1.5 in winter.
