When I was at the Volt's homecoming event in Detroit last week a Volt engineer suggested I try the DashDaq data acquisition/display computer. Has anyone tried it? I already ordered it from Amazon but they haven't shipped it yet so I should be able to cancel. From what I understand it is very cool and it gives you over 400 data point and sensor inputs. I would like to get specifics on engine RPM, regen values etc. Apparently Drew Technologies have a Volt specific software package (for an extra $95!).

If I don't get any feedback soon then I will provide some later in the week if I get it soon!

Ok, got it today and WOW!

It is picking up almost 200 parameters and the display is very nice. I bought a sticky disk from Radio Shack and can mount it with the suction cup to the left of the primary display screen (behind the turn signal lever) and can route the cable in the door seal. I am still playing with what sensors give me what information but so far I am impressed. I also have to play with the different themes since each theme has a different number of gauges and data value boxes. I also like being able to record timeline information on an SD card.

I did have to buy the Volt licensing to get all the information but the inner engineer in me is very happy now!

Do they have an on-line user's manual? What sort of info is available in the on-line customer support area?

Yes it does. There are about 15 parameters just for the high voltage battery alone! I will need too look and see which one will give you kWhs used/remaining since last charge (some of the data inputs are a little cryptic.) One piece of info that I found interesting so far is how and when the secondary motor is clutched into use. The main motor (B) will hit over 6000 RPM then if there is little torque change the other (A) motor starts being used and the RPM on the B motor drops by half. Also, it look like during regen the B motor is clutched again to increase RPM. Amazing that all this is going while being TOTALLY transparent to the driver. I have a lot to learn still about the inputs and the data.

The price is $549 without the GPS nav feature and the Volt license is $95. I bought mine through Amazon which saved $15 and it was delivered through TunerTools. The Volt license is not on their website yet so I had to call and do it over the phone which was quick and easy.

Question: from their website they make no mention of a "Volt License", just a "GM enhanced" license. Is it necessary to ask specifically for a Volt license or would a GM license include the Volt parameters?

The Volt license has to purchased over the phone by calling Drew Technologies.

The GM license is for all other GM cars but does not have the parameters specific to the Volt. I asked them if the Volt license will work on other GM cars and the answer was no. However, the installed generic parameters database should give anywhere from 30-60 parameters (with 60 for 2010 and newer cars) and should give most non-Volt car owners everything they need unless they want to do advanced troubleshooting on their own.

I am also tinkering with their custom skin builder so I can have gauges and data fields that are custom for the volt. If I can come up with something better than the built-in skins, I will let you know.

You can see the installation in my Volt and keep in mind that I shot these with a large body pro digital camera and the lens is well below eye level so, when seated normally, the steering wheel does not obscure the screen at all:

So when we've heard in the past that the Volt doesn't have a OBD-II term for instantaneous kW power usage, if this list is canonical that's true. There's no "HV Pow" term.

But (if one were to have described the ordinals in a loose BNF form), it should be no more difficult than <1524> * <1528>

This looks... Interesting. Does term <1613> return modes as described in the patent? And I don't see an obvious way to tell if the friction brakes are deployed...

Trans Mode (1613) is just the selected shifter (P,R,N,D,L) position. As for the friction brakes, I haven't found the correct input for that yet. Most inputs are pretty clear but I am still trying all the different inputs to make sense of a few of them. I did suggest to the people at Drew Tech that they compile a list to describe each signal (their description) input.

This is extremely interesting indeed. It seems I have some OBD protocol reading up to do.
Is there any other functionality in this device beyond pulling the codes, storing and displaying them? Because if that is all it does, I would assume raw data acquisition with a less sophisticated device and offline analysis with a PC is possible as well. $700 is a good deal of money for something that I have no rational justification for - except loving statistics :)

JetJock, were you able to get a display of kW consumption/generation going? I spoke with them yesterday, and after hearing that you can do a sensor*sensor calculation for a display looked it up in the owners manual. It does, in fact, look pretty easy in theory...

I'm seriously considering one of these pups so I can get answers to the "Just what does driving like X do to Y" type of questions...

I did ask about the second OBD-II connector in the car, and they muttered about how it's proprietary and may not even be OBD-II signaling/voltages - and how that might damage the DashDaq if I tried to plug it in... I'm somehow dubious of that, but I don't think I'm keen on risking that expensive a unit just to try it out.

Does the maintenance manual have anything to say about signalling and what data's available on the passenger side OBD port?

Hey JetJock, did you ever come up with any skins you like?

I've been trying things out with mine today, and I have a skin (actually, just a one page skin) that displays:

Motor A RPMs (analog gauge)
Motor B RPMs (analog gauge)
Engine RPMs (analog gauge)
Transmission output RPMs (analog gauge)

Motor A Torque (analog gauge)
Motor B Torque (analog gauge)
Engine Torque (analog gauge)
Axel Torque (analog gauge)

Motor A kWh usage (analog gauge)
Motor B kWh usage (analog gauge)
Battery kWh usage (analog gauge)

Driver Requested Brake Torque (analog gauge)
Regeneration Brake Torque (analog gauge)

4 X medium sized Digital Gauges (which I'm just poking stuff into, while I flesh the thing out).

The Brake Torque gauges are more interesting than I expected. Presumably anytime the regeneration torque is less than the requested torque the mechanical pads are applied. During relatively brisk braking it's interesting to watch the regeneration trail the driver's requests, and how quickly it catches back up.

The ddskin file is about 800 kB. If you're interested I can try to send it your way, but I don't know that I can post it to the forum or as a PM. It gzip-s down to about 68 kB though, so maybe if I compress it. My firmware revision is different from yours though (...-2036), and some of the signals are different. Doesn't look like any of the ones I'm using though...

That is really interesting, thanks for the info!

As for the skins....I am in the middle of a divorce and don't have much free time to mess with it. Hopefully I can get to it in the next few months. I love the device and fine tuning the gauges would be really helpful.

Also, the input list I posted was sent to me by the DashDaq people. My firmware is the same as yours.
