I think that for a owner of a Volt who uses the vehicle for both commuting and overall driving, the design leads to 50% electric and 50% gasoline use. On my 4,000-mile vacation last summer, I found no charging stations. On my 4,000-mile vacation this summer, I paid about $10 three nights for campground sites with access to charging electricity. Paying $10 per night for $1 of electricity is irrational. My vehicle statistics have dropped from 180 MPG to 72 MPG. The lack of infrastructure and the travel delays for charging a battery pack is not going to replace gasoline for a long, long, long time ~ if ever.
