The question came up a couple of weeks ago about how to get the tax credit for a new Volt purchase in Colorado. So to clarify this I asked the Department of Revenue. Below is the answer I received:

  1. Purchase the car in the State of Colorado - need to file a copy of the purchase invoice, which will show if the credit was applied at time of sale.
  2. Register it in the State Colorado - need to file a copy of the registration

Detailed instructions are found in FYI #67 and you use Form DR-0617 to file.

Now to the actual question that came up. When do you claim this credit? There are two options - the first is the dealership can file at time of purchase. The dealership is hit with a $150 filing fee when they do this. The second is the purchaser can file with their taxes with no filing fee. In either case you must still provide the above documents and fill out DR-0617 when you file your return.

Even if you can't get the dealer to eat the $150, methinks that the paperwork hassle and waiting for the tax credit to hit next year would make taking the credit at the time of sale a no-brainer!

It's at the discretion of the dealership.
