I had been developing a bad case of a low speed clicking noise in the front end when stopping and starting. Searching the forum turned up a few owners with similar noise, but the causes seemed to be varied.

It finally got so bad that I took it to the dealer - first problem trip to dealer in three years. Service tech found a bad right side axle shaft. I'm puzzled as to how a shaft alone could make such a noise, as I was expecting it to be a bearing or CV joint problem. Took a couple days to get the parts, but dealer gave me a loaner so I was pretty pleased. Now my 2013 drives quieter than ever.

Has anyone else had to have an axle shaft replaced?

Was it just the shaft or was it an axle shaft assembly complete with inboard and outboard CV joints? Seems odd that a metal bar would make a sound especially when CV joints are known for making a clicking sound when starting to fail. I suppose though that the point where the axle gets attached to a CV joint could wear?

My guess is it is the axle assembly with the joints. Mine failed at about 9k miles on the left side and felt like a CV joint failing, sounded like it was a fairly common issue with the early Volts, but not all of them. If it is just the axle maybe the splines in the shaft open up a bit and clunk? I don't know and didn't ask to see the part(s).

It was covered under powertrain warranty.

My intermittent clicking noise was a sticking brake caliper pin. Some cheap lube and it fixed my clicking on my 2013.

Good question. The part # is 22868218. The sketch in the parts listing is rather vague. It's called an axle assembly, so it very well may include the CV joints.

Yes, an axle shaft assembly includes any CV joints. (which likely was the source of any noise)

Availability of axles

I search to buy the two axles assemblies left and right but they are not available! Do you know anything for the availability of that part? I live in Greece and they have to be sent by mail. I ordered them from eBay but the seller informed me they are currently anavailable...
Can anyone find them for me?
