Hi everyone!
I've just bought Chevy Volt after accident and I'm looking for GM MDI scaner.
I'm living in Sacramento,so looking here.
Will be appreciate for help.
PS. Chevy dealer said 500$ only for diagnostic, crazy :(

Everything I've been able to read on the MDI seems to indicate you need an active account with the GM servers for it to function properly. If someone can correct me on that, please do so as I'd love to have full functionality beyond '09 (I have a tech 2 for older models). And I agree, what the dealerships charge just to plug a device in and check/clear a few codes is ridiculous.

This is correct. The MDI itself cannot do anything. In your case it would also require a subscription to the web resources that would permit the installation of at least GDS2, possibly Service Programming as well. Then there's SI which would provide the correct sequence of events necessary to actually accomplish resetting the car after a deployment level accident.

$500 seems a bit excessive, but it probably includes the critical inspections necessary to perform after such an accident. This process if formalized by GM and it should be performed by someone trained and qualified to do so.

Depending on how bad the wreck is, I'd start with a regular code scanner and go from there. DashDaq seems o be very comprehensive, but is more expensive to buy than your dealer visit...

I assume that the original poster feels very confident working around high voltage too.

FYI neither of those tools (or ANY aftermarket tool that I am aware of) are able to clear "secured" high-voltage DTCs or reset the necessary "crash detected" flags should a deployment level event occur.

I know that couple guys could unlock the car after accident. Now my Volt wont start because system is lock.
I unlocked my Spark EV - procedure is exactly the same for Volt, find my post. You need GDS2 s/w and a GDS2 scanner tool to reset latched High Voltage side. Similar story - dealer service manager told me I will "burn my skin" with high voltage if I do not know what I am doing. My answer to him was - "what do you know about electricity?"

This should be my 10th post... I really need to get my high voltage service light off. I just jumpered a wire across the coolant temp sensor in the front under the tank. So far so good, I depotted the sensor and hope to figure out how to send pics soon. Thanks for the pics of your project, very inspiring!

I have almost finished repair body, still need unlock Volt.
Foto will be in few days.
Very interesting your project. I know it's an old thread but I bought a 2014 wrecked but with a lot less damage. Just a little front end crash. Driver side airbags deployed which I already replaced and sent the Airbag module to reset/reprogram to erase the crash.

I'd really appreciate if you solved your problem with yours and got it unlocked. I'm about to buy a GM Scan/Program tool to see if I can do it myself but I need more info.
