In and around Los Angeles there are numerous hills and mountains.
I get a big kick out of charging the Volt (2015) w/ gravity.
What is the best 'gearing' and speed for doing so?
-I use D to keep up the speed and not go 30 mph on the freeway. But does L charge at a higher rate?
-Does higher speed charge at a faster rate than a slower speed? Is there an optimum charging speed?
-Does braking while gliding increase the rate of charge?

Thank you.

in a theoretical world, the energy gained from going down a hill is the same regardless of how you do it. In a Volt, the differences are very small.

If L actually slows you down going down those hills, and D doesn't, I personally would probably just put it in L and let Cruise Control sort out the speed. It'll do the right things to keep you moving and manage the regen and charge use automatically, at least as well as you could by hand and probably better.

This is exactly what I do in the Colorado mountains.
