I got the 'unable to charge' message on my 2013 volt a month ago and suspect the charging port (which does have cracks on the back). I've
  • ordered online 3 times from places which cancelled the order the following day when they realized they did not have one in stock & could not get one
  • so I ordered one from the local dealer (its been 3 weeks and nothing)
  • after a week, I got one from a junkyard (which also had cracks)

So the questions are,
- is there a way to find a new charging port (I see this as Drive Motor Battery Charger Receptacle #23281030)?
- is there a way to repair the old one (assuming I cannot find a new one)? (i've tried 'drying' it out with a hair dryer & sealing with silicone with no success)
Note: the pins don't look bent on the charger port
Note: I don't see any 'burning' or obvious degradation of the electronics on the charger port

Thanks for any thoughts..

I don't have any words of wisdom but I will say that this doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that a part so basic to the operation of our cars may be no longer available.

Yeah, agreed and it sounds like a pretty common failure for gen 1s. I just read a post for another who is 'infinitely on backorder' from his dealer. My problem (without going into details) is the ICE does not work, so I literally have a brick unless I can find a way through this.

GM Parts Canada indicated there are several orders from customers that are pending but no indication of when those orders will be filled (I am one of those). I let the GM Parts Canada people know that this situation is going to affect my decision to purchase another EV from them. Many of us expect/anticipate our EV based vehicles to last many, many years so parts availability is a key factor now. I at least can run on the ICE via Mountain and Hold modes in order to keep the battery cycled somewhat vs. just running in 20% charge sustaining mode. I am only getting 9 liters/100km or about 26mpg on a us gallon.

FYI: i'm going to try an ELR charger port on mine. Part is available unlike the volt part, 2 posts indicate it may work and I have a brick until I can fix this problem. I'll update on what I find.

ELR part #: 23281029
Volt part #: 23281030
Are these two parts interchangeable? I'm in the same boat as many others posting here, in my case with a 2013. I see conflicting posts, some saying it's the same and others saying they're not. Dealerships say it's backordered. If interchangeable, is that simply a matter of dealers not officially permitted to swap? Thanks for everyone here.

An NHTSA bulletin mentions them in same breath but distinguishes 2011-2013 from 2014: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10154592-9999.pdf

I cannot answer the question entirely since it did not resolve the issue with my 2013. Though I was only 70-80% hopeful that it would. I'll start a new thread on that issue since I'm back to square 1 & trying to collect more data.

I can tell you it physically will fit your car and plug - but that's not really helpful. If you want me to ship you my ELR charger port that I just tried to try on yours - just let me know.

I was able to purchase the ELR chargeport on eBay. The guy have sold seven of them so far. It’s says “almost gone”. I figured I would give it a shot and find out. It is suppose to be delivered tomorrow, so I’ll let you guys know if it works in my 2013 Volt.

Heee is the link just in case anyone is interested
