My MY 2012 Has always been very trouble free. However, I've started seeing a strange behavior with it over the last 2 months where the charge door has been spontaneously opening while going down the road. Today it happened again while traveling home on the interstate at 65 MPH. It seems to happen when a bump is encountered in a certain way as it does not happen all the time. Today it was a bridge expansion joint. Last week it was a bump in the road while traversing a "round-a-bout". This is about the 4th or 5th incident. Any one have any ideas? I've had this car since new and it has never done this over its 42000 miles except since the last couple of months.

The times it happened to me, I think I closed the door too quickly enough for it to latch, but not fully latch. I now slow down, make sure it is fully latched, and never had a problem since. But because the latch depends on a spring to allow that tab to close, it's very likely the tab is worn and needs replacement.

This is a sign of a latch failure. The push to open/push to close latches do wear out over time.

Could be wear causing it, but the early model years didn't use the push type latches. They were solenoid type release latches. That has happened a few times to our 2011, but I also believe it was only when the latch wasn't fully engaged. Don't remember this happening yet to our 2014, it is still very low miles though.

The 2012 does not have push to open on charging port door, it is spring loaded and has a locking pin that retracts via an electric solenoid when you press the release button.

I have never had that happen, make sure you don't have anything in your pockets or keychain pressing the release on the key fob, although I am not sure that will work while driving. Also use some silicone spray or something to lubricate the latch mechanism. It gets sticky after a couple years, maybe it isn't closing fully.

2012 have different latching, mind. Electric opening. Doesn't mean it's not latch failure, but it does complicate things that a short in the door wiring could also cause this, something leaning on the keyfob could cause this, etc.

Mine had a different problem, it would stick shut/not open when I pressed the button to open. It set a trouble code and the door was replaced under the Voltec warranty. Maybe yours would be covered also, but it will be hard to get it to repeat for the mechanic.

My 2013 sometimes has the door open. I don't seem to notice it when it happens just when I'm starting the car and I see 'charge door open' message.

That and when I want to open it sometimes it doesn't work and I hold the button down then it opens.

I'm very careful closing it, kind of feels like it's turning a little gear or something.
