The chrome surround (really chrome covered plastic) is delaminating on the right, top side of the center stack. Silly me, I thought perhaps the entire switch cover could be replaced. Today, I was told that I would have to order the entire center stack, about $750 for the part, and that GM has it on "restriction," so it requires a special order.

This is a 2013 Volt.

Any thoughts about easier solutions? Perhaps blacking out the chrome surround? Other ideas?

Thanks.

Easiest would be to try to cover it again with some other material. Some people have used Contact paper, but I think there are trim kits out there that use something a bit better... I've see guys on here use wood trim, but I'd personally go for black or something similar (I don't like the chrome anyway, it can be blinding in the right light).

Alternately, check ebay for the whole faceplate... kind of extreme to replace the whole faceplate for this, but it is an option. Just need to make sure you have the exact right options (Nav, heated seats, etc), I would verify correct part number via dealer (or disassemble and check yourself) if you go this route.

If you're real handy, maybe just try to peal all the chrome bits off leaving the trim piece it's natural color, whitish if it's like the stuff from the 70's that used to peal back then, and try to repaint with a chrome paint.

I find mine has a little bit of pealing on the back side of the trim (closest to the windshield).

@Belgin - We're referring to the small bit of trim embedded into the top of the center stack that's just above the center screen. Similar piece surrounds the top of the driver screen.

I would remove the trim. I'm sure it pops off and replace with chrome wheel well trim that has double stick adhesive on the back. I'm sure it will follow the radius of the bezel. If you don't like chrome, they make it in black. Then I would also replace the trim around the DIC.

Mine started peeling, too. But I was just within the B2B warranty that covered it. Might be able to make an argument of a "known" issue. I bet at the least they could cut you a break on the price or labor. Decide then if it's worth the trouble trying a DIY.

Try ebay for a replacement?
