We bought our 2014 Volt yesterday. Headed out to dinner at an unfamiliar place and tried to program the location into the Nav. The screen froze and everything (radio, climate, navigation) was frozen. After searching on this site I realize that I performed the exact sequence (Destination, POI, Category, Location, City, Last 5, Choose a City) that causes the screen to freeze. I can't believe that this has been a known problem since 2012 and has not been fixed yet! Is it worth taking it to the dealer, or do we just avoid that sequence in the future? Are there other known sequences that will cause the screen to freeze? I certainly don't want to be on a trip and have the screen freeze.

Did you contact Onstar and ask if your vehicle is showing any codes?

All of these computer related issues are most likely encountered when you first get a device. You're not that self aware and you go down routes which were not anticipated by the engineers. While the Volt is far more complicated than most software driven devices, I've had less issues with it than my iMac or Olympus camera (the camera is on my mind because a new model was released and first buyers, including moi, have experienced lockups).

See if you can reproduce the freeze. My guess is that you won't be able to. I can't. You probably have to get the car into some other state first. The problem is in figuring out how that happens, and until you can reproduce a problem you can't fix it. The system is just too vast and interconnected.

I have had my 2012 Volt for over two years and it has over 24,000 miles on it. I have experienced about 3 odd behaviors of the center console in that two years. (Most related to operating the climate controls or Nav.) All of them were solved by shutting the car off and re starting. It's just the nature of these complex touchscreen devices. You might want to contact your Volt advisor at (866) 790-5600 if it happens again. There may be a software update that can solve the issue for you.

Thank you for suggesting that I contact Onstar. They ran the diagnostics, but there were no codes. He suggested that I contact the EV specialist.

Happy to hear that this is not a frequent issue. Thanks for posting the Volt advisor phone number. As I get familiar with this vehicle, I'm sure there will be other questions for them.

My nav screen froze in a tunnel, but did not do anything until the car was turned off for over an hour. I was just navigating to a favorite. Anyone know the Volt help number in Australia as the dealer is slow to respond, now that the sale is complete.

The second day I had my Volt the center stack did something weird, it froze on a dim screen that said "power off" the screen would do nothing. I stopped twice and turned the car off completely, it did not solve the issue. I drove the rest of the way to work (18 miles) the car was operating normally and full electric. Turned off the car again at work waited 5 min and it still had the frozen screen. I called my dealer and scheduled a noon appointment, when I started the car a few hours later everything was back to normal. I cancelled my appointment and now it's been 13 months and 14000 miles later, it never happened again. My Volt has been 100% reliable for me.

Afternoon EvilBrunt,

I apologize that the screen froze on you. Glitches and flukes do happen with any electronics. When the Volt is powered down for more than 10 minutes, also with both key fobs out of range. All the modules will go to sleep, when powered back up it acts as a reboot.

This is why the Advisors recommend powering down the Volt and walking away.

If you continue to experience the screen freezing see if there is a way to duplicate it and share with your Service Advisor.

Happy Driving!

Mine froze on the 2nd day. I was flipping through the XM channels, while I had Nav up. While I was zooming out using the Tune Dial, it froze. Happened to be on a country station on XM (I'm not a fan), and couldn't shut it off, nor lower the volume. Good thing I didn't get on the freeway yet. Pulled over, shut the car down and turned it back on. No luck. I had to shut down, open and close the door twice, then turned it back on. That did it.

We have a 2014 Volt purchased Oct. 2013. The center screen was freezing up. Finally the local Chevy dealer had a software fix for
it. It was ok for a few days but yesterday on a trip to Hillsboro Oregon I noticed it froze up again. When its frozen it takes about 30-45 seconds to unfreeze and then go back to normal. The problem when it freezes up is your backup camera does not work. I'll have to let the dealer know that the fix was not a fix as it is still a problem...

My turn to "chime in". I have a 2015 fully optioned Volt. I was using a 64gb USB 2.0 with my 8,000ish mp3's on it with 6 .m3u playlists. I had recently modified the files to level off the db volume in them and when I reinserted the USB,, it kept "indexing" and not showing the playlists (.m3u), it previously showed. Soon, the screen froze and I could not change functions nor see the backup camera.

Any thoughts?

Bought my 2015 in November. On the drive home the center console went black. Thought it was my fault, but it's happened scores of times, intermittently. Sometimes the whole trip, sometimes coming on unexpectedly during the drive.

When it's black, I can't use see to control the climate, can't choose the audio except randomly, and the backup camera doesn't work.

Called OnStar, no help. Dealer gave me a handout telling me that I should call and hang up from OnStar to fix it. Doesn't fix it.

And, since it's intermittent, I can't make a dealer appointment to show them what's up.
It's extremely annoying, of course.
