Well, that didn't take long for a comparison test to show up in this month's issue. Please note that it is not online yet (sorry). I'll summarize their results:

Prius: Ugly, slow in hybrid mode, ugly, really slow in BEV mode, roomy
Volt: Looks a bit like an Elantra, drives great, tight rear seating, quick, and worth the extra money

Winner (by a healthy margin): Volt

We came from a Toyota prius, Ford Fusion energi, and now the volt. After test driving the prius prime, I agree with the article. Even with the new improvements, the prime feels disconnected from the road and still have some sway to it. The ride quality on the volt is much better. The prime has an mpg advantage, but that's because it they've tone down the acceleration quite a bit. It's definitely not a fun car to drive.

Did they give it the "Pick up a girl for a date test"? Bet not..... There is no bigger douche-canoe than the new Prius. Its so douche-baggy they replaced the new car scent with AX "Harmony" body spray and saw a 10% increase in sales.

Car and Driver's plus/minus summaries were pretty good:

Prius Prime:
+ Lulls you into the slow lane
+ Soft Ride
+ Lots of Back Seat Space
- Oddball Design
- Lacks' the Volt's Range
- A tortoise on the road
- Minivan handling
= Sometimes the Hare wins

Volt:
+ A better EV
+ A better hybrid
+ Better handling
+ Better looks
- Small rear seat
- Costs more
= The best plug-in hybrid yet

As I was reading his post, I was thinking "man this guy sounds like Elemental" and then I realized he WAS the guy who posted it. LOL

Truth be told, at todays prices, with many reporting $5K off the Volt's MSRP and the fact the Prime is in demand due to being new, they're about the same out the door price for the base model...However, want safety equipment in the Volt? That'll be $5000 (MSRP) over the base to get the Premier, C1 and C2...

Give them a break. It is Car & Driver - the legacy of the great David E Davis. They share the values of most Car Guys. I read the article, and they came to exactly the correct conclusion. :)

"The Volt has a 45 mile range" ??? In Los Angeles??

In 28 degree Portland weather my worst was around 52, semi-hilly.
I typically get 45 to 50 miles range on a full charge here in the LA area. Keep in mind that if you are going 70MPH on the freeway you are probably backing traffic up. At 65MPH you can start to piss people off, sometimes even at 70.

Moneyquote:

While the Prius Prime might not please those of us who love driving, Toyota's reputation for reliability and the Prius Prime's soothing driving experience will be compelling enough to win over fuel-obsessed buyers. Just don't drive a Volt after signing the paperwork.

heh
