You should be able to set your home (knows GPS coord) charging level preference. As I recall that added that in Gen 2. Tesla's (and others?) have had that before GM followed suite. Check manual.

No, on Gen 1, it defaults to 8A at the beginning of each drive. If you change the setting during your drive (like while waiting at a stop light) it will respect that setting for your next charge at the end of that drive. If you install a level 2 charger at your home, then it will charge at the higher rate automatically on that equipment.

I charge at level 1 and I manually change to 12A whenever necessary. However, most of the time I just leave it at 8A for overnight charges because that is usually adequate (overnight is a long time). It is easy to see the displayed charge completion time, so I know at a glance if it is necessary. So in the end it is not much of an inconvenience.

This default was one of the complaints Gen 1 drivers had, so Gen 2 handles it a bit differently.

I got a LVL 2 charger and I'm happily using it at home.
But when I change the charge mode from 8amp to 12amp on the 240V charger, it doesn't change the finishing time.
I noticed the DIC says something like 12amp is only for portable chargers.
Does the 12 amp charge mode make any difference? Or it's only 8amp when 240V is used.

Whenever you are charging at level 2, you will automatically be at 12A. There is no way to change that for Level 2 charging.

The only time you need to change or can change the amp setting is when charging level 1.

if you are using a Level 2 charger, unless you are using the Volt's OE Level 1 charger with an adapter cable, the Volt will try and initiate all Level 2 charging at 15/16 amps (the 2019 Volt can charge at up to 32 amps if the car is equipped with the optional 7.2kW charger.) The OE Level 1 charger is limited to 12 amps, this is also true when using an adapter cable and charging at 240V.

I program the Volt by departure time, a schedule was too much!

So when I get home from a drive I hit the leaf button and see when charging will begin.

If it's after 10pm when rates go down I just turn it off and it will charge at 8amps.

But it it's earlier then I change the charge level so I stay in the low rate.
