My wife was in her white 2017 white Volt, driving in the diamond lane on the 405 in LA when, for some unknown reason, an angry motorcyclist slowed down and punched her side view mirror, flipped her off and sped off. Not what she needs right now. She is getting chemo for breast cancer so her nerves are already a little frayed.

Only the mirror glass is broken, so my question is whether the whole thing needs to be replaced and does anyone have any recommendations on parts sources?

Sorry for the ordeal. It looks like we suddenly have a lot more idiots in this country.

I recommend replacing just the mirror. Replacing the whole thing requires the case to be painted to match the rest of the body, which can add to costs.

A quick Google search found this http://mirrorglassplus.com/2016-192/.
I don't know anything about this company and they don't list a 2017 version, but I believe it is the same as the 2016.
There may be others with cheaper prices so search longer than I did.
I have done this repair on a Malibu before, and all you have to do is break out and remove any remaining glass. Then install the new one. It has adhesive on the back and just sticks on. If it is heated and/or has the lane warning LED, there will be a cable to plug in also.

Burco has replacement mirror glass for the 2016 and is most likely the same for the 2017. I have installed many of these for work and the quality is good. A glass shop like Safelite can help you get the install done if you're not sure.

Fits perfectly...just make sure you're careful scraping the old mirror/adhesive off if you have heated mirrors.
