Is there a noncritical reason a check engine light could come on? I bought the car yesterday and later in the evening my check engine light came on and stood on. This morning it was off and never came back on. I still took it to dealer for check up and they found nothing wrong? Should I be concerned? should I get a second opinion? should I wait a week or two or three? Help...

If it's a loose or leaking gas cap or similar issue with evaporative emission system EVAP, the fault code will reset itself at some interval. If it comes on and stays on then you may have a real problem. There are so many sensors that could set off the check engine light. If you have something more serious like O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, EGR sensor, the code will likely stay lit and can be read with any OBD2 reader.

there are also flags that can be tests that have not run due to system resets
you see these on Volts that run 100% electric

only a problem in states that make you have a full yearly inspection.

I would be annoyed with the dealer--these codes will remain in history for diagnostic purposes. Did they tell you what the code was or related to? It may be that the code was set but there was no problem found with the associated system. But I'd still want to know what it was flagging (e.g. gas cap as mentioned above).

Thanks All for replying. So dealer said they ran tests including emisions and found nothing wrong, but I should bring it back next time when light is on. I appreciate the info on the history, I was not aware I could ask for a history of codes. I will look into and update all. thanks again everyone!

It will sometimes come on if there is a power issue during charge, and will shut off afterwords.

I beg to differ. I went into the dealership a 4 months ago because the cooling fans would ALWAYS come on every time I shut the car down. No matter the temp. There was no light. When I pulled into the dealership they pulled two old codes and one current code all related to the EGR> Replaced the EGR under warranty and everything went back to normal.

Ok Friends, it happened again. this morning I got in my car powered on, CEL came on and when I put it in gear dash read "put back in gear (park)" and check??? It wouldn't acknowledge drive or move? This happened 3 times, finally I turned off completely opened drivers door, closed drivers door, started car and all worked fine with the exception that the CEL was still on??? I drove this morning and around 12pm I started again and CEL was off???? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am schedule to take to "Toyota" dealer where I purchased. Should I take to Chevy dealer?

Just stop by any parts store and ask them to read the codes. And buy your own code reader.

Could be a 12V battery throwing errors, esp. indicated due to it working after it was not letting you drive it. Also in general, if high voltage battery has intermittently bad cells, you can see the MIL activate and you will also get errors relating to shifting the vehicle back to park (even though it will let you turn the car on). Though the last time this happened to me, it wouldn't let me restart the car. It seems there are some high voltage battery faults that will make the car brick and others that will let you drive it.

Was it replaced under the power train warranty or the PZEV Emissions Warranty Coverage?

EGR is covered by the 5 year 60k mile powertrain warranty.

The Voltec warranty is the one that's 8 years or 100k miles (does not cover the EGR).

Thanks. I have an EGR CEL code coming up, at 93,000 miles on my 2016 Volt. I also heard about the PZEV Emissions Warranty in California, which I imagine might cover an EGR valve replacement. I wonder if I need to take it to a dealership or if another mechanic could work on it.

Any know the answer?

Did you ever figure out the issue? I mistakenly interpreted the engine symbol next to the speedometer as the check engine light, when it was actually indicating the car was drawing power from the engine (not the battery). I took it to a shop and they ran a code scan and found nothing.

Hoping that was the problem, just really confusing UI
