I've been trying to figure out my bluetooth issue and I wonder if I have stumbled across the cause. Not sure how to resolve.

So Bluetooth works most of the time. I get in the car, phone connects and audio starts. Sometimes however it would connect, start playing but there would be no sound. A random combination of disconnecting, restarting phone bluetooth, plugging into Android Auto via the cable would eventually get it to work.

By trial and error I have realized if I use the phone only in the car it continues to work. However if I use the phone in the car, then with my BT headphones then later in the car, this is when it doesn't work. Even the "connected" sound is different, being distorted instead of "clean"

So suggestions?

1) Any idea how to get it working more reliably
2) Once it's not working what is the fool proof method for getting it working again.

Phone is Nexus 6P

Thanks.

On my iPhone with a g1, I have found two techniques that work

1. Wait a good 30-40 seconds after starting the car before trying to stream

Or

2. On my iPhone, I can swipe up to get to control panels, swipe right to get to whatever audio is playing, then pop up a menu to switch to the phone's speaker then back to the volt's audio. I'm sure Android has a similar setting somewhere.

I'm convinced this problem (At least for the g1) is in the Volt infotainment system and not my phone (I've used a mixture of iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone SE, iPhone 4, and it doesn't matter, the car infotainment seems to be the culprit. I don't have an android to test this out though, as that would be the nail in the coffin). Again with a G2, your mileage may vary.

Back weeks later.

The problem continues. It did not start with 7.1.1. It's definitely the car because I have zero connection issues with other cars and other Bluetooth devices. I can live with it if I can figure out a way to workaround, I will try the speaker idea mentioned above if I can figure it out

When I got my 2015 Volt. the phone I had would pair but PODcasts were difficult to listen to as it would drop words at the beggining but would improve over time. I once had a MOTO G power phone that wouldn't pair. Now I've replaced my phone witha LG Stylo 6 which will not pair.

I have a bluetooth speaker that the stylo can not find while i try to pair it. the phone can find the tile for my wifes's keys.

I had tons of problems with Bluetooth in my 2017 Volt. It would cut in and out, continually connect/disconnect, and the touch screen would go blank. Bottom line, I got the Human Machine Interface (HMI) module replaced (not cheap) and it solved the problem. I am super-happy now.
