With only a handful of Model 3's in the wild, imagine my surprise yesterday afternoon when I saw one a mile from my house, in Novi MI (Detroit Metro Area).

The car had a personalized plate and was driven by a middle-aged Indian woman. I have to assume this is her personal vehicle, though it's possible she's a local Tesla exec. I believe they have an office in Troy.

I have to say, the car looked great.

Are you sure it was a Model 3? AFAIK, the only 3's delivered were to employees in CA....so pretty far fetched to think some random lady in MI already has one. And if somehow it actually was a Model 3, that lady would have had to go out of state to pick it up, since Tesla can't deliver cars in MI: http://www.greencarreports.com/news...-be-sold-to-michigan-buyers-lawsuit-grinds-on

edit: I guess it's possible she's a local Tesla employee.

I stayed a week (November 1989) in Novi. Is the water tower still there?

There have been Model 3 sightings across the US. Recently one was spotted supercharging in my area, they were doing a speed run from west coast to east coast. I'm sure there are many being long term tested (lots of miles logged).

I would guess these NEW OWNERS/OPERATORS/EMPLOYEES/BETA TESTERS are on paid vacation and tasked with driving the hell out of them before they actually start delivering REAL cars. Would love to be one of those folks. Pack up the family and drive, see your family, friends and America and get paid.

I was a system tester in a previous career. I'd be great at testing out all the features, especially in the infotainment system. Elon, send me a 3, I guarantee I'll find bugs.

As far as I know, all deliveries for the next few months will be to Tesla employees. Some have stated that they aren't employees and that the configurator will open up to them before the end of the year. In the meantime, my money would be on an executive level Tesla employee. I'm not sure how many line-level employees can afford a $50,000 car. Maybe if they saved up, but even if they did, they'd probably receive the internal reservation sign up later than executives.

Absolutely aware of this. That's why I was so surprised. In this area of Novi, MI there are many multi-million dollar homes and Tesla sightings are not uncommon. I typically see Model S(es) and this stood out as having a more squared off nose and rear deck and the overall length appeared to be shorter. I understand, "no pics or it didn't happen" but I'm 90% sure of what I saw. :)

My best guess is that she's a high level employee at Tesla or a significant investor. Would only take about a week to ship the car to MI from CA. An insignificant cost for anybody operating at that level. There were actually two people in the car, but I didn't get a good look at the passenger. I was heading in the opposite direction, so no time to grab a photo. If the owner lives in the area, I'll see it again, I'm sure.

Remember, that's as long as it's within a half of those circles on the Supercharger map, because those radii are one way tickets.

Of course you can always plug in at Granma's on L1 and stay a spell!
But that's only if she is within one of those radii.

You'd only get to see part of America with a Tesla.
