I use a basic 'ibolt' holder i picked up in Best Buy last year for a few pennies ..... seems to work fine on the dash and my iPhone sits just atop the main screen.

Yes. I wasn't expecting much but it has a strong spring and good rubberized "feet". It is a solid mount and feels as if you will rip the console out if you try to pull it out without depressing the release mechanism.
Yes that, plus it presses against both round knobs. When you pull out the mount, you will see that the thin rubber lips inside the CD opening will be all squashed in. I'm so afraid that the gray rubber feet from the mount will one day come off and remain inside the CD unit since I live in Texas (blistering hot).

Hello Gen 1 Volters:

I think I found a dash mount for my smartphone/GPS that has all the features that I wanted, which are:

1. Mounted higher up on the dash, but easily reachable by driver or front passenger and easily secured to mount.
2. Power cord can reach the location without too much "dangling".
3. NOT down near the Power button, gear selector, little cubicle or cup holder.
4. NOT hanging onto air vents or visors.
5. NOT on the windshield or side vent windows.
6. Doesn't require any "jerry-rigging" that makes things look untidy.

It's the Scosche Magicmount that costs around $ 17.

Thanks for reading!

Does that leave a mark on the dash when you take it off?

For the guys that mounted the mount on your dash, does it leave a permanent mark?
Those things attach with seriously good adhesive. It ain't coming off without leaving a big reminder of where it was. You may be able to scrub the residue off with some solvents, but that might just melt you dash, too. Which is why I developed the VoltPhone brackets...

No marks left behind, it secures with a soft rubber suction cup and NOT adhesive. You have to push down a lever to secure the suction cup. I feel that that the location for my Smartphone GPS is perfect (eye level), not too low and not mounted on the windshield (too far).

I also considered the Voltphone 2 & 3 brackets, but I just didn't like that the center dash lid remained "forced" open (i.e. slightly open/lopsided). Bracket #1 mounted way too low for my liking/safety.

Here are some more photos:

I bought the Scosche MajicMount with the adhesive option.
I mounted it to the upper left side of the center screen. Works well, doesn't block windshield.
Sits about ⅔ up left dash vent.

My buddy uses one of these in his car (not a Volt) and really likes it. He has it coiled around in a cubby near the bottom to result in the proper height, plus it adds a bit of stability. When they took a trip in his wife's car, he was able to just unplug it from his car and adjust it to fit hers.
