Battery efficiency curve?

I don't think this has any real practical applications but it's something I've been idly wondering about.

I don't suppose anyone would have any idea about kWh consumption of the battery for different speeds and different road grades. For example, let's say you have a 20% incline at the start of your trip, and then a slight decline for the rest of your trip. I'm curious about whether you might end up coming out ahead. Convential wisdom says no. But if the electric motor copes with a short, steep incline significantly better than it does with a long shallow incline, it might be possible.

Edit: Just to clarify, I don't think this would be better than a flat run. But I wonder if it would be preferable to a slow climb followed by a slow descent.

I would like to see a graphic that tells us what exactly our KW usage is in real time.

I have had cars that tell me the instant MPG.. this would be similar.

It was very useful. You can actually see what you actions do and change what you are doing to increase efficiency while driving.

There's a solution for this...

GM has apparently partnered with Drew technologies - the "DashDAQ" can see 128 parameters from the CANBUS, and can easily give all sorts of instant use numbers. I just got mine today and am still trying to figure out how best to set it up; Rusty has been blazing the trail with one for a while, and I've seen posts from half a dozen other people on the forum who have bought one.

2012 Volts show cumulative kWh used in the "this charge" energy usage screen. It does adjust for regenerative braking, includes energy spent on climate control, and the results can be a little odd around mountain mode (kWh usage doesn't change even though battery charge level does for energy gained in MM.)

I'm assuming you can estimate total system energy consumption by summing kWH used and gasoline used. Since the engine is being used to generate that kWh, to add it to the kWh meter as well would be double counting. It makes sense to me.

tboult let me know or post pics of any data or tools that may come with. (The bluetooth and droid phone setup.) I am interested. The DashQ looks cool but I don't want to offend my friends who came up with scan gauge.
