Has anyone had any battery cell issues on their Gen2 Volt?

My Volt is currently at the dealership having a battery cell replaced.

I have Gen2 Volt purchased 2weeks before you. No battery problems so far. What were the symptoms that indicated a cell needed to be replaced? Do you mean multiple cells or a single cell?

IIRC, there's three groups of cells and it may be one of the groups that's being replaced.

I was told cell 59 showed a fault. I need to confirm more details when repair complete. I would guess that with the cells in pairs a pair is being replaced. I was surprised they were interchangeable at the dealership.

For the symptoms, I first noticed that after an overnight charge the range estimate only showed 56KM (normally 90-96KM). When I started the car and pulled it out of the garage the engine started and the range estimate showed 0KM. I restarted and it went back to electric power and the range estimate showed 92KM. Very soon it repeated with the engine starting.

I believe they replace a module. AFAIK cell failure was something like 2 problems per million. Thus, while it has happened, it's not likely you'll find a lot of people with the issue.

I had a cell failure on a cell near the cell that failed for you. They had to replace the entire battery segment containing the failed cell...I don't think they can replace individual pairs. When mine failed, my car wouldn't even start up anymore. It showed 0 miles and 100% charge, even though the actual charge was empty.

Yes, I had a cell failure on my 2017 which I reported here. One of the cells in a cell pair (#74 if I remember correctly) failed however the car continued to be drivable. Sometimes you could run it in EV mode, other times it would set a check engine light and default to IC operation. One section, the forward most of the three, was replaced several months ago. No problems since the replacement. I guess sometimes things don't work right or just plain quit when new.

Still continuing. Its been 3 1/2 weeks since the first issue and 3 weeks since parts were ordered and they were just received at the dealership yesterday. Now the mechanic needs to read up on the repair process. Yes, like both of you suggested the front Battery segment was shipped.

Its interesting to note that my dealership did not know what exactly was coming until it arrived. The process was combersome with no etas provided. A contact at GM Oshawa explained that GM elected to go through a single 3rd partly distributer to administer the batteries. It may work better in the US but getting it to Ontario Canada was a slow process including holdups at the border.

Its good there have been few battery issues. Getting close.

I do have to say that my 2016 Volt has been the "best car ever" for me. This experience has also shown just how great a vehicle the Volt is. So far I have had a Malibu, Cruze and Traverse as rental cars and while they all had good features I really miss my Volt.

Hang in there, Driven. Your patience will pay off and hopefully when you get back your Volt, you can enjoy it from then on with no more worries.

Reassures me that despite driving a Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, you still prefer your Volt. Why did you change rentals so much? Were the Malibu and Cruze unsatisfactory? If anything, I'd expect the swap order to be Cruze -> Malibu -> Traverse in terms of comfort. But then I'd just be assuming things.

There is a long story on the different rentals but suffice it to say the Malibu was clunky and drove poorly, the Cruze was great but we had a flat tire and instead of fixing it they delivered the Traverse as it was a Friday and they were out of Cruzes. The Traverse is nice but I'm not used to stopping at the gas station so much. And here in Ontario our "cheap" gas is $1.07 a litre or about $4.15 a US gallon.

Thinking about shipping problems with large format Li-Ion batteries reminded me of an I-MiEV that I once owned. When the dealer had a battery problem (not my car) the only way to get a part was the entire pack. That was shipped from Japan. How was it shipped you may ask? By placing the replacement pack in another I-Miev, shipping the entire car to the dealer, swapping the bad pack into the "shipping car" and returning it to Japan! True story. Talk about a long turn around time.

Back on the road 4 1/2 weeks later. It wasn't a fast process but I had the middle section of battery replaced. Most of the time was spent waiting for the part. GM Oshawa was great in providing information to me, and repair over site that gave me a higher comfort level. The dealer and tech was less thrilled about the over site.

If you want to really appreciate your Volt, stop driving it for a month.

I had 2 out of 3 cells fail. The moderators have since completely removed my post after they changed the title to something like "Dealer replaced my batteries for free". This forum is a joke.

If you act like this at dealer service departments I can see why you have issues. If the forum is such a joke, why do you keep posting here? No one is begging you to stay.

You have spammed the forum with this false claim that we removed your post. We did not. Make one more claim like that and you will be banned.

Sorry Verticalscope, the owner of the forum has removed my thread and not steverino the super moderator.

No.

No one, not me, not another moderator, not VerticalScope intentionally removed or deleted your thread. It's a technical issue when the data was transferred to the new hosting platform. It sucks, but was not intentional or desired.

Apparently they recently moved to another hosting site (I think it happened while I was in the middle of a post as it went wonky then). Some threads got dropped. Some people got removed from site (including me). A hiccup in the move process. I just got on with it and reapplied for an account. No conspiracy theories. It just happened that way.

After having moderators change the title of my post to give it a more GM friendly spin I find this accidental loss of information hard to believe.

I had the same symptoms as you, I posted a comprehensive walkthrough on this forum that I guess was deleted like many others. Sent message to moderators, no answer.

Briefly, one cell was problematic so they changed the rear (biggest) cell group. Worked for a week, problem reoccurred. They changed the BECM good for a week. Then they soldered some x358 pins directly, then changed the HPCM2. Took 5 visits and maybe two months.

Working since. 4 months.
