has there been any discussion or reserach about how lithium ion batteries would react to the desert SW?

Since this is the fastest growing area of the US I would think thsi would be a concern as it is my understanding that the lithium ion batteries have problems in temperatures above 150 F.

Which will be a problem out here on the roads...the inside temperature of our cars easily exceeds these temepratures in the summer.

Ever wonder why Aptera's color is white?

For the Volt, it should be isolation of ICE from battery pack so that it doesn't get the heat.

I trust GM has this worked out. Their proving grounds are in Arizona. They work hard to make sure all GM cars perform well in triple digit temperatures.

It is known that the battery pack is to have a cooling system just for the batteries. It will no doubt have a thermostatic type system on it to keep the batteries within optimal temperature ranges. This is one of the many reasons that lots of testing must be done and we can't have one until 2010.
