Ever since I've had OHM-RIDE it has always made the occasional heat expansion/contraction "thump" from the spoiler area. Research indicates this is fairly common.

However

This summer the sound has increased into a VERY loud BANG when it happens. The sort of sound you might expect if someone hit the roof of your car with a golf ball (which is what I thought had happened the first time).

It is -extremely- startling when it happens at random driving down the road and I need to do something to fix it so suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

I've experienced this a few (2-3) times in my Volt, however, due to the randomness of it I wouldn't be able to point to an exact area (other than the back of the car/roof area maybe).
Dutch, if you follow through with messing with the spoiler like in that thread I'd love to hear if that solves the loud bang/pop sound as it is extremely startling/unnerving (even more so with a easily startled wife in the car!) when it does happen.

It happens on my black Volt a lot. Mine is pretty loud. It certainly is noticeable, even over road noise and the radio. It's also very noticeable when I'm outside and the car is parked and does it. On mine it seems to come from the back passenger side of the spoiler.

Thanks, I've been experiencing this for a few years but didn't think I'd get anywhere starting a thread saying my car makes a popping sound in the rear. I never would have guessed the noise to be from the spoiler experiencing heat expansion. Thankfully, after over four years of driving the Volt, this is the only issue I've had.
