GM OnStar app, only available to some Volt owners, spells out charging cost and has potential to tie into home automation system.
by M. LaMonica

"Every plug-in vehicle owner knows it’s cheaper to drive on electricity than gasoline. But how much electric driving actually costs is tough to ascertain from a monthly bill.

General Motors has developed a smart phone app designed to tell Chevy Volt drivers exactly how much car charging costs on a daily, monthly or yearly basis.

The EcoHub app is only available to people in the Pecan Street development, a community funded by federal research to explore how different clean-energy technologies can be integrated. But the company intends to make it available to other Volt drivers over time. And the app shows some of the potential of tying cars into the electricity grid."

And please post when it reaches the Google Play Store, too. There are many more Android smartphones than Apples, with better features, and cheaper, too!

A good question is where are they collecting the data. Is this the normal onstar information or is this new data now sent to onstar ?

OR is this some type of new wifi device attached to a charger ?

I agree as well. I just dropped Onstar to my caddy out of pure frustration on how lousy the app has been working. 2+ minutes to either get a response or fail is just awful. Today I tried to send directions to my car and they never arrived. The app said sent to vehicle. I ended up using my iphone maps instead. This is becoming the norm with Onstar and I refuse to pay for lousy apps and service. I am getting to the point where I am just giving up on remotelink, Onstar.com and myvolt.com as all of them are so inconsistent with responses.
