In my old Volt, the only reason why it would do that is if it detected that the key was still in the vehicle. I turned that off because it was annoying and loud.

I turned off all of those settings in my new Volt but for whatever reason, it still makes that annoying sound.

Two instances where I noticed it happen:

--Turned off vehicle. I opened the door then I closed it.
--I left vehicle on but had to go outside to open the garage (I don't have remote yet and for whatever reason, GM didn't include garage opener on the new Volt). Closing the door while the vehicle was still on activated those three beeps of the horn.

Eventually the battery drained engaging the generator intermittently to maintain soc. Every time I get out of my car at the end of my driveway to retrieve the mail I either have to leave the door open or deal with the car blasting me in the face.

Since the recall, MY2012 now does the 3 beep thing when I close the door with it on. I drive truck for a living and on cold mornings I start my truck and sit in my car for a while until the truck (somewhat) warms up. There are houses nearby and the 3 beep thing is actually more annoying than my truck running.
HERE IS HOW I STOP THE 3 BEEPS: With MYVOLT on, lower drivers window slightly, as I get out of the VOLT and close the door, I stick my hand with the VOLT's key fob thru the open window for a sec and then put the fob back in my coat pocket and go start my truck. NO BEEPS and only takes a sec to put the fob in and out of the window. Kind of a pain .. but it works. If anyone has a simpler solution .. please post it !!

You don't have to turn off the car. There's no way to defeat it permanently, but if you have your keys in hand, open you driver door window, get out, close the door, reach in to break the plane of the window with the key fob, pull you hand back out, auto close the window and then you can lock the doors while keeping you car running, when you walk away it won't beep. But if you go to the trunk, open it, close it, then wal away, it will beep even after you did the previous theatrics.

So after that long explanation, it is almost easier to just shut the car off. The reason I jump through these hoops is to keep the music streaming from my phone through Bluetooth to avoid the 30 seconds or so thst I have to wait for the sync process between starts for my trip to the PO box. I wish I could have stopped them from installing this software update, but it's done, there's no going back.

It doesn't triple honk if you open the door. It does triple honk if you exit the vehicle with your keys, close the door and start walking away from the car while it's running. I think it also honks at you if you turn off the car, get out, lock the doors and your significant other leaves her purse in the car with a second set of keys inside.

Is it louder on the Volt than on other Chevy's? My cruze has the three honks when I get out of the car and leave the car on, but it's not really that loud.

When I brought my car in to get the windows tinted they left the car running the entire time not knowing to push the button again. Radio, AC running, open door going bong bong, etc...don't think 3 beeps would have made any diff to those guys.

If it's changed for gen2, that's good. But on gen1 its full volume ear-splitting honks.

At the very least they should have made it a triple version of the "charging" honk, much quieter but still obvious, but much less likely to annoy your neighbours. Even the pedestrian honk would have been better.

Ya, both variants of the triple-honk plague are *seriously* annoying. I can imagine many scenarios where poorly-timed honks could result in awkward, or flat-out harmful situations. I really hate having to apologize to my neighbors for my car. Annoying our neighbors doesn't reflect well on the brand. This crap has to stop. I would put a switch on the horn, but I really like having a horn, you know, for doing things a horn was meant for. Grr. Please, PLEASE fix this GM!

The easiest way to fix this is never leave the car with the car running.

The 2nd way to avoid the triple honk is to have keys in hand, auto open the driver window, exit the vehicle,close the driver's door, hold the keys and put your arm into the cabin, then pull the keys back out of the cabin, auto close the window removing your arm quickly enough to not get caught by the window, then hit the lock button on the fob.

Alas if you open the hatch after going through these steps, you still get the dreaded triple honk.

I just let it honk as I stop by the PO box daily and decided it wasn't worth doing the hokey pokey dance every time nor did I want to shut off my car and have to go through the Bluetooth pairing excercise to get music streaming again...plus at home my neighbors are aLL about a half mile away.

I get the circuit. I don't get why. I think we're trying to doable the horn with the car parked but running. So are the DArL's off when you park the car but leave it running? If it's dark, certainly the headlights are on thus the dreaded triple honk.
