Another LED Headlight Question

19004 Views 87 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  IM0001
Looking to upgrade my headlights. After reading many posts ..... I'm more confused than ever. Lots of links to products no longer available etc....

I'm never sure which ones fit and which ones do not. I bought a pair that fit my son's Cobalt(?) but they didn't fit my Volt. I have a '12.

Anyway, would one of these work? Which one? H7?, H11? I'm kinna sick of looking. around.

Any help is always appreciated. Thanks.

What I see is a guy who completely fails to understand the difference between posting "I have that I think is a better solution because " vs "That stuff is crap and you people are idiots", which is how you generally come across to others in this forum.
I’ve explained myself quite a few times to you and others. Even proper LED setup, OEM or aftermarket isn’t a march for a basic HID setup.

Even as a glare kid as you push to most people.

The comment you made towards me could also be turned around and pointed back at yourself.

“I use LED bulb swaps so everybody else must also use LED bulbs swaps”

Okay then, and we've explained our positions too. Right in this thread. That should do it.

It's like using extension cords. We know you shouldn't, you can be told you shouldn't and yet you will if that's how you've decided to go. What's best doesn't matter. What you're going to do is what you're going to do.

I'm very pleased with my second set of LEDs. I have no doubt that HIDs could be brighter, but this is what I decided to use. It does what I want it to do.

Your straw man doesn't compute. My line is more like "Ok we're in an LED thread, if you decide to use LED, these are some of the better ones on the market". I don't go around to HID threads and say "that's dumb, only LED is the best".

But to address your photos... looks like nice output but again it's not super helpful since you don't give any specifics, especially given that you say 2018 in the photo and it is still 2017.

Ooops!! Credibility out the window there. Sorry Turboguy.

You do realize there are 2018 model year vehicles out that you can purchase right? If you don’t know that who is credibility are you questioning?

If you're buying a Mini Cooper (among others) you can't buy a 2018 until Monday. Notice I didn't preface with "you do realize".

It doesn’t have to be in the year 2018 to buy a 2018 model year vehicle. There are many manufacturers that sell vehicles long before the year start there are many manufacturers that sell vehicles long before the year starts. How do you not know this? Lol 🤦

Just another reason not to buy a ****ty Mini Cooper.

Did I deny it? No, I pointed out something that's true. I can buy a February issue of my favorite magazine today. That doesn't make today a day in February, or 2018.

So if there’s nothing wrong about my picture, then why did you even bring it up?

Did I? Piled on I did, followed with the word sorry (a half-hearted swipe at manners I admit).

I did not know headlight replacements came in model year versions, but thanks for making us aware of it. Someone was recently discussing the Dunning–Kruger effect with me. Strange coincidence that.

There's all kinds of things wrong with reposting that picture from facebook. There's no indication from you or the OP on facebook what car(s) are involved, or exactly what equipment is used. And it's almost impossible to trust these kinds of pictures anyway if you have any kind of smattering of knowledge about how to edit photos - it's way too easy to adjust the image to make the product you're selling look better. And most of these kinds of photos are taken with cheap cameras or phones, so you get all kinds of automatic levels, which can render things unevenly.
I tucked my heat spreader braids inside the lamp assembly, spread them out, put the dust caps back on. I checked the temperature a few times by touch they were fine after a good hour commute home. I know they suggest to drill hole in dust cap and have heat sink braids exposed. they are still working just great.
Had a led go out (just over a year of use), so i used a step drill to create hole in dust cap, put braids through the cap for better heat disapation.
I never put the dust caps back on; just let the braiding hang out in the wind. Have these installed in both of our Volts and have seen zero issues even in heavy rain and high humidity (admittedly rare here).

Also put one in my dirtbike (plated) headlight hanging out into nothingness and it sees conditions that no Volt ever will; mud, ice, heat, vibration. So far it has also been flawless.
So we have 2 '13 volts. I have morimoto 35w hid and she had 55w. Her ballasts started flickering so I put in some used led bulbs. The led doesn't hold a candle for light output but they're simpler to install and better than stock.
This thread has been a very interesting read. I'm also very disappointed in the stock headlights on my 2013. After reading Dutch's review ( http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread...-with-9012-kit-in-a-Generation-1-(%9111-%9115) I ordered the Morimoto 2Stroke LED set. I'll post my opinion after I install them.

Ten years ago I bought a used '98 BMW 328i. That car had the best headlights of any car I've ever owned and it was just four of the old fashioned halogen reflectors with a color temp of, I'd guess, around 3700K. I upgraded to a 2003 BMW 330i with HIDs. While they were technically brighter I did not like them as much as the old style reflectors. I think the HIDs were around a 4300K color.

I'm 55 with very mild cataracts and my eyesight correction is high (-6.5). I suspect I suffer from chromatic aberration so the higher the color temp the worse it is. On the other hand, the higher color temp should in theory yield more contrast. We'll see.

Get the IOL surgery done. Better to do it now while you're younger. I had mine done at your age. It's worth every penny.

Apparently due to my extreme myopia, with no corrective lenses I can focus perfectly at about 3-4". That's great for finding small problems on printed circuit boards, etc. I'm hesitant to get the IOL surgery because I'm told I'll lose that ability. Comments?

I can't speak to myopia. I always worked on circuit boards with one of these:

The IOL can correct a lot. I was almost at my limit for stronger lenses, but it was the cataracts that were skewing my vision. It was time. In my family we get them fast and young.

I wouldn't suppose to give advice your professional should give for your situation. I can only tell you that I only need glasses (mildest of readers) for reading and computer work (even milder). It's nice to get them off my nose when I'm not working.

They were done one at a time, and between surgeries I was amazed at both the color and clarity difference between my eyes.

I've been holding out hoping for some revolutionary miracle to fix my eyesight. I forgot to mention, I've got a lot of "floaters", too, that impact my vision.

Getting old is great ....

Wait till you have a vitreous detachment. I have one in the left eye (not my good eye - I'm amblyopic). It's annoying but eventually you learn to ignore it if it's not dead center to your retina/lens.

I've had floaters all my life. That runs in the family too. Something about blue eyes maybe. Come to think of it, I haven't noticed any in my good eye lately.

Now tell the truth. Eye surgery scares the crap out of you. Once you get through the first eye it's a breeze. When you see the difference between surgeries you'll be very glad you did it. Just have a highly trusted and rated surgeon do it. That goes a long way to calming the fear.
