Active Grille Shutters

In order to improve the aerodynamics and maximize thermal efficiencies the Spark EV employs an Active Grille Shutter system.

The system includes a motorized actuator that closes louvers at the front bumper to enhance vehicle aerodynamics in driving situations where cooling and A/C loads are relatively low and high levels of front end airflow are not required.

The engine control module determines shutter state based on various vehicle conditions such as vehicle speed, coolant temperature, fan state, refrigerant system pressure, A/C compressor state and ambient temperature.

If high levels of airflow are required the active grille air shutter actuator opens the louvers.

Do they modulate or are they just opened or closed?
The 2014 Chevy Cruze Eco has these shutters, too. According to the information I read, they close when the vehicle is moving faster than 45 MPH (give or take a few MPH). The purpose is to reduce drag, so it is beneficial for drivers that travel many miles at higher speeds. I don't need such a device because I hardly travel over 45 MPH, and only once a month.

Here is Chevrolet's page about the Cruze Eco:

The item is described as "Lower front grille air shutter" and it is a base option. It seems that they were available on all Cruze Eco models, starting with the 2011 model:

GM may add these shutters on other models as a gas saver.

I was just going to say the cruze eco has had these as well; I remember reading about it a few years back, possibly for MY 2011

Yup, it was 2011: http://www.greencarreports.com/news...helping-2011-chevrolet-cruze-eco-reach-40-mpg
I believe I read somewhere that the new Silverado has active grille shutters. Check me on that.
So do some big rig trucks and some eco Fords and some eco Dodges. And some race cars. And my Weber. Oh wait, the Weber's aren't 'active'.
My 2011 Volt has active grill shutters as well. That's what the salesman told me. :)

They are modulated through a range of positions.

... now if they can just get that air dam to raise at parking lot (and driveway) speeds that would be very nice too.
