Volvo have just announced that they will only build hybrids and pure electrics after 2020 with no future diesels. The diesel is starting to die in Europe due to pollution concerns. Ford has a solid electrification plan as do most world vehicle producers, so I think it is not the time for GM to ditch the Volt or electrification.

It didn't say that they were ditching electrification, it said they are ditching sedans. I HATE!! SUVS/CUVS/TRUCKS and I will never buy one. I was hoping for a Gen3 Volt in 2019 or 2020 with twice the EV range as the Gen2, it looks like that isn't going to happen so this might be my last Chevy. The BEV that I want would be a sedan or a roadster with 400 miles of range but I don't think that will happen soon enough so around 2019 or 2020 I might compromise and get one that has a 300 mile range and a good fast charging network so probably a Tesla although if the CCS network looks reasonable by then I might end up with am Audi or BMW.

While it would be disappointing to see the Volt go the technology and batter pack would be adapted to the Malibu which is a very nice looking car with a nice size interior. A CUV? Sure, why not. If in 2020 I would be fine with that, 2022 would be too alte

The Volt is just too small of a car for us, but it is the best extended range vehicle on the planet that is affordable, so we'll have to suck up the inconvenience of a small car.

Ideally, the height and layout of the Bolt is excellent for us, too bad it isn't an extended range vehicle.

We aren't buying any pure EV's such as the Tesla and the Bolt, no matter if they're going to have a 500-mile range. I need an extended range vehicle that is bigger than the Volt.
+1 million!!!

I need me a Voltec Subyukonade!! If GM never builds it then shame on them. I've got these GM card rebate dollars I need to burn in 3 years. Come on, give me something good to buy.

I'll settle for an FNR-X.

As long as Chevy moves the Voltec technology to a difference vehicle, I am a customer. If the go to making either gas or electric only cars then I am gone. I do enough long distance trips that I can not rely just on pure electric and I really love the smooth ride of the Volt. My only really big complaint about the Volt is that it is a little too small for me.

Now we all know how short American's memory tends to be so I am not surprised that more Americans want huge vehicles, but I am guessing when gas goes back up, we will have a flash back to 2010.

Been seeing some more articles about this. It's hardly a done deal. GM has made no official statement, this story comes from the union which is pushing to move crossover production to the plant to save jobs.

It seems like a foolish idea to drop sedans just because they aren't popular at the moment, if you do that then you lose those customers forever. They lost me for 30 years because of the quality of their 80s cars, it was only because of the Volt that they got me back, if they don't offer an electric sedan when I'm looking for my next car then I'll go elsewhere.

I'm actually OK going all electric and all gas. That could mean and all electric commuter car (that is nicer and more roomy than the Bolt) plus a Subyukonade or Land Rover for long family trips with the option of towing a camper or utility trailer. I can live without a Voltec, but am happy with my gen 1 volt. If gen 3 disappear and the rumored Voltec or electric CUV gets axed, then I move on and pick something else. In the immortal words of Robby from the Jim Henson "Dinosaurs" TV show, "What do you mean there aren't any more? That's what more means!"

Glad to hear that. Cross volt would be great, but I can't see any SUV having the good ride and overall experience of the Gen 2 Volt.

Try driving a Chevy Equinox. It is one of the best GM vehicles, selling more than ANY other except the Silverado. And the Gen 3 Equinox is now on the same D2XX platform as the Gen 2 Volt, so it is the most likely choice to become the CrossVolt.

I am a sedan guy myself but The Boss wants a form factor comparable to her 2008 RAV4 for her next vehicle when it comes time to replace it in the next 2-4 years. The Bolt might work but since we often carry 2 aging parents + walkers I suspect the behind the 2nd row cargo area would be a deal killer for us. So, count me in as a cheerleader for a Voltec or 200 mile BEV Equinox. The Equinox class vehicle is red hot right now and Voltec is a perfect solution for it so I am puzzled why GM has been waiting so long. Hopefully the plug in Kia Niro will sell well and light a fire under GM and some others.

Anything less than 50 will not work for me... One of the reasons why I passed on the Gen 1...
The gen 1 was the best car for me in 2013. I also drive 50 miles round trip per day, but netting 70 mpg over the 20 mpg I used to get has been a big deal. If my gen1 was totaleled in a fiery crash, I wouldn't buy another g1, but maybe a g2, ELT, or CT6 PHEV even though the Caddies still wouldnt' get me to work and back on all electricity. Just waiting patiently for that breakthrough vehicle. The model3 and bolt compromise too much on space. The S and X are too pricey (as are the Cadillacs). Ther seems to be a big chasm in the mid sized $40-60k range vehicle that is sorely missing. Lots of small cars and big cars, nothing just right.

Right now the only EVs that will work for me are the Gen 2 Volt, Leaf, Bolt, and Tesla. Only the Volt will work for me as a primary car as I take two or three long trips each year and don't want to wait for recharging.

It's a 20 mile round trip just to get from my neighborhood to C-470 around Denver.

I think perhaps too much has been read into this as being GM repeating the EV1 decision. I think GM has invested too many resources to kill the technology and will likely take the Voltec powertrain or a variation of it and install it into other models. I can certainly see many of the models, including the Volt being low on the sales figures when compared to SUV's trucks and other large vehicles which are the bread and butter of GM sales.

Lets face it, most hatchbacks aren't big sellers unless it's a hot hatch geared toward the under 30 group and a hybrid generally isn't sporty so it's possible GM will try to put the technology into something with more appeal and hopefully a more traditional design. We know the technology isn't a failure as it's certainly one of GM's most reliable products but the package in which it's installed is likely a hold back for a lot of people since it doesn't have the storage or passenger space that more traditional vehicles have.

I'm surprised the CT6 is on the list. It's too new, the old retirees who normally buy Cadillacs haven't had a chance to even see one yet. But their flagship vehicle might be hurting because of the Tesla Model S - and the PHEV versoin just doesn't compare. Think of it. This way, a base CT6 starts at $54k. For just $20k more you can get a Model S, that same $20k more gets you a CT6 plugin with only 35 miles of range. That makes the Model S a no brainer. Now if the CT6 plugin were discounted by $20K, it could be a very attractive car. I hate to wish poor sales on GM, but that translates into a lower price for me.

Edit: cars.com is already showing CT6 PHEVs at $66k. It's getting closer....

2014 Volt Premium - Safety pkg 1 and 2, Navigation
possibly true.
I did not see it or paid no attention to it.
It popped on google news feed.
News along with Volvo stating they are getting out of the internal combustion engine business and fully focus on all electric cars.
VW committed to heavily invest R&D in electric vehicles.
Chevy is on the right track with the Bolt. I can see the why the hybrid of a full blown gasoline engine+an EV jammed into a small compact may not fly well with most Americans that constantly crave "bigger".
If Chevy can make the BOLT with 230 miles on a charge more affordable and a bit larger, that would remove most gasoline car from the road of the commuting masses.

Chevy Volt on the chopping block for 2022

It seems that our beloved Volt may be on GM's chopping block for 2022 as GM considers several sedans to stop production on. Say it isn't so!

I don't think they'll stop using the Volt name all together. I think most likely GM will change the current form of the Volt from a sedan/liftback to a CUV and continue to call it a Volt. The Volt is a valuable brand for them, they're not going to just toss it in the trash. I'm not worried, in fact, releasing a Voltec powered CUV has been a common request around here for many years.
