Hi all

New Bolt should be arriving in 7-10 days. i have driven two Volts the past 6 years and took the leap to all EV. I have a question regarding Zaktek paint protection. This is a dealer add on that I am not familiar with. Suppose to be a paint protection product. They claim this will counter the harsh AZ weather. They are charging almost $500. Anyone have any knowledge of this product. Never had this with my other cars the past 12 years. Thanks in advance

I'm always skeptical of these type of products. Lots of states have lots of sunny day's, including Colorado for example. How do car paint jobs fail under sunny conditions? Slight color fading could happen over time. Does that really matter to you? Was paint fade a problem with your last few cars?

It sounds like you don't keep cars more than 2-3 years anyway. Paint fade will be minimal to non-existent in that time frame. A decade would be another matter depending on time under the sun, but at that point, again would you care?

If I really wanted to prevent paint fade, dash cracking, hot interior, etc., some snake oil salesman's paint elixir is not the way I'd go. YMMV

I think a car cover would be more effective (and less expensive) if your car is never garaged, always out in the sun. Also a hassle.

Our Bolt EV has become our go to car. Our Volt might be feeling a little ignored these days, haha.

How much do you want to pay for snake oil? On a modern car you don't need extra rust protection, paint protection etc.

Scotch Guard fabric protector for cloth seats would be a good idea but you can purchase a can of SG and do it yourself, no need to pay the dealer to apply this fabric treatment.

Don't forget to add that True Coat.

Look for an independent detail shop that can do a credible "new car paint correction". Then have them apply a ceramic coat such as Opticoat. I had this done to my Volt when it was new, and it still looks great with minimal care. (Also just had it done with my new Model 3.)

Congratulations!

In my opinion, all of the interior, paint, glass, and theft "protections" are simply scams to inflate dealership profits.
Dunno. I thought so too, but mine came with some X stuff on it from PO (still has the sticker on the door glass) and there's exactly ONE nick in the front paint in the nearly 7 years on the road. Maybe it's just been lucky, but maybe the stuff actually worked. (And it's on the plastic bumper cover, so... I'm not bothering with it. Perfect cars lead to obsession. (It came with minor dent in the rear passenger door. The sales dude frettted about it but to me it was just "I don't have to worry now. It's pre-dinged." Then shortly after the chip in the bumper showed up, the old guy in the Pilot rumpled up exactly that door and I got a new one out of it. Fine.)

You must be purchasing from a Berkshire Hathaway dealership. If you ask them to remove the fee, they will.

Have you talked to any dealers in California? The deals there are much better than any deal you will find around Arizona.

When you get your 2019 Bolt, I would appreciate either a PM or post with a pic of the "car wash" setting from the owners manual to see if it has changed from the 2018. It's already been changed once but I'd like to see if it changes again.

Is ACC available on the 2019 Bolt?
I don't believe that ACC is available, yet, on the 2019 Bolt. There was an unconfirmed rumor that ACC will be available on the 2019 Bolt, at some point later, in the model year.

You can download the manuals at:

Remember that "Car Wash Mode" is only necessary for use in unattended automatics car washes where the car goes through the wash without you.
