The long awaited smart fortwo ed for the USA and Canada, in the new model 453, is reported today to
have an EPA driving range of 58 miles.
The previous model, the 451, had a range of 68 milies.
Mileage expectations were ranging from 90-100 miles.

We know that cold weather can cut this range practically in half,,,,,this is a very Big disappointment !

Unless it comes with a L-O-N-G extension cord it appears to be a intracity car only

I've never understood why people buy the smart car. The ice version gets worse mileage than a Prius. The ev version gets worse range than a leaf. Now if everyone had a tiny car, I might join the crowd, but as it stands today with all the pickups and SUVs on the road, I see the smart car as SUV bait.

@Mr.D

hahahahahahahaha

The only use that I see for a Smart Car is if you were a multimillionaire and wanted a smart car EV to get from the house to the pool or the stables. And even then a golf cart or a gator would serve that purpose.

how can something called ED be good news?
If you have one for more than 4 hours, you'll want to see a doctor?

Love those pictures Mr. Dave. I just had a thought (yes it hurt :)). 58 miles is sufficient for my daily driving (most days) but when I want to go somewhere longer where I can't charge I'll need gas - wait, I have just the vehicle, my 2017 Volt.

If I were going to get something like a "smart car" I'd get a Spark. Half the price and just as useful.

Good one Mr Dave. :D

But seriously, how can something called ED be good news?
The only Smart car joke I couldn't find an image for. The thought crossed my mind too.

I'll be calling everyone I know to brag, including my doctor. That hasn't happened since I was 19. I may have been on drugs then too.

We very much enjoyed our 2 year lease with first gen Smart ED. The Leaf steering wheel was not adjustable and I just couldn't get it into a comfortable position on the test drives, so had to rule it out. Plus, it felt way too slow. We leased the Smart for under $150 with small amount down. We are both good size people, but car was way better than expected and did plenty of trips to Sam's Club and stuffed items to ceiling in back. Because it is tall and narrow, the wind does blow you around a little bit, but never felt unsafe. It is put out by MB after all.

The manual suggested to try to keep battery above 20% though. Made it hard to go too far and keep to that rule. We only did a two year because we hoped there would be better choices by now. Didn't like newer Volt and not willing yet to go back to gas, so just sticking with our Ford Focus EV for now. Sad to hear range went down for the Smart.

When we go camping, we see a lot of SMART cars being towed behind class A motorhomes. Given the challenge of towing a Volt, there may be a purpose in life for SMART cars...

I've had my smart since January 2009. I bought it or fun, and after more than 8 years and 140,000 miles it still runs like new !
I have never had a problem with it, it has been extremely reliable. Yes, it's not for everyone, but it is fun!
I put oversized tires on and have no problems with trucks or anything else on the road. And my plastic panels have no rust :D
