Probably not necessary, but engines that get minimal / extremely short-term use are prone to extreme carbon buildup, as far as I know. This is one pitfall of the Volt's minimal engine usage -- like a human being, an engine that does not exercise will atrophy.

The carbon 'gunk' can affect performance down the line. My recommendation -- put your Volt in HOLD mode and drive down the highway at 85 miles per hour for a few minutes (at a safe time to do so, mind you). This should flush out some of the crap.
