Would you try a couple of things if you are currently experiencing the brake pedal / cruise control problem?

First, see if RESUME works after the cruise control had been disabled by using the brakes. With the cruise control engaged,

1 -Step on the brake to disengage,
2 - Fiddle with the brake pedal the way you would to get cruise control to work.
3 -Does pressing the RESUME button active the cruise control?
4 - Does pressing the SET button activate the cruise control, confirming that your fiddling with the brake pedal was successful?

Second, while the cruise control is acting up, tap on the brake pedal as if you wanted to flash your brake lights or disengage the cruise control. Do it rapidly five or ten times as if you were an annoying little kid trying to make noise. Does your cruise control now work and does it continue working normally?

I'm starting to wonder if this whole thing is a firmware problem and would very much appreciate your data.

I think if you have to ask what problem you're lucky enough to not have it, but I'm speaking of the need to pull up on the brake pedal to get the cruise control to engage. There have been many threads discussing it.

I'm not sure that it matters whether it's ACC or conventional cruise control, but I have conventional. I welcome responses to my original post for either type.

Strangely, I HAD the problem--but after pulling the brake pedal up with my foot and slamming it down a few times (after reading these threads), it oddly "fixed itself." This never happens in any car and just me posting this means I am likely guaranteed to get it back.

But this is what I did, and cruise has been working flawlessly for quite a few months now. I'm almost worried to get it fixed, even though I can, because my dealer diagnosed the issue but didn't have the retainer clip in stock so I didn't do it at the time.

You may do a search, I seem to recall this being an issue on gen2. Hopefully someone who knows the specifics will chime in. But it does require a trip to the dealership.

I've been to the dealer many times. The last was a week ago, when they replaced the entire brake pedal assembly. As you can guess, a week later and the problem is back. A very light tap of the brake pedal sideways or up will allow the cruise control to engage, but must be repeated after each application of the brakes.

I've noticed that if the cruise control is disengaged by braking, RESUME does not work, as if it has lost memory of the last speed. If cruise control is disengaged with the left hand switch of the cruise control cluster on the steering wheel, resume does work. That begins to sound like more that a position sensor problem.

The good news is that cruise control has started working normally after two days.

I spoke to the dealer and Volt certified mechanic and they're going to discuss with Chevy and get back to me. They've been very good about trying to get my car fixed.

I have not heard of this problem nor have I experienced it in my 2017, and I use the cruise every time I drive. Is it as simple as the brake pedal switch? Has anyone been able to confirm that the brake lights are still on when the problem occurs (until the pedal is pulled up)?

This happened to me for one day driving back from New Hampshire this summer. I suspect something got up under the car and interfered with the brake pedal position sensor. I wasn't looking forward to driving across the midwest without cruise control.

I've driven many many cross country trips the last two years in our 2017 Volt. The last trip (Maryland to Denver and back) was the first I've experienced problems with the cruise control re-engaging.

Like others have said, once the brake pedal is depressed, re-engaging cruise doesn't work. I wasn't aware later (after getting off the road and reading this forum) of the problem as a whole or about lifting up on the pedal so I didn't consciously attempt to do so. However I can say that once the problem occured, it always seemed to clear and cruise re-engage within a few minutes or so later (cleared on its' own.)

I've not made the attempt to have our Volt repaired yet, and after reading above of the whole pedal assembly replaced and cruise engagement problems persist I think I'll sit on my hands a spell, and see how this plays itself out.

The only time I've seen cruise not work is when it's raining very hard and the sensor gets very wet. Once the rain lets up and the air dries the sensor, things get back to normal. Of course hard rain is one of those times when I really appreciate ACC because frequently it can "see" farther than I can.

I believe there is a TSB regarding a redesigned brake pedal retainer clip to address this issue.

I have a 2012 Volt. My cruise won’t activate at all. I can turn it on, and the green light indicating that it’s on will illuminate. However, I’m not able to “set” it. Any thoughts?
I'm confused. I also have a 2012. If the indicator shows as white, Cruise Control is "on" but not set/active. If it's not there, Cruise Control is off. If it's GREEN, it's set and active. So if you see green, it's set and should be on. Are you saying that you *are* able to set it, but it does not maintain speed? Or are you saying that you really are unable to set it and the indicator shows white?

I have had the wonderful privilege of the cruise control issue in my 2017 Volt with ACC. I could get it to work when pulling up on the brake pedal by pressing RESUME or SET (they both worked for me). I did notice that when the cruise was being finicky (it at times worked fine for a spell, usually about the time I would schedule an appointment to bring it in to the dealer) I barely had to touch the brake for it to disengage.

I never tried the "5-10 rapid taps" of the brake pedal but did try the "mashing it hard to the floor" on more than one instance with no change to the ability of the cruise to work.

They first replaced the vaunted retainer clip which seemed to work flawlessly for over 1500 miles and then suddenly the cruise started to act up again. After several attempts taking it in to the dealership and the cruise would magically work on the day I took it in I tried another dealership who replaced the brake pedal sensor which did not correct the issue. They did more research and talking with Chevy and were told the next step was to replace the entire brake pedal assembly.

They sent me back to my original dealership for their repair work as they had a Volt tech. It was quite an undertaking. They said the job was suggested to take 12 hours but I think it ended up taking them closer to 16 to complete. I am happy to say that since this service my cruise has worked flawlessly (except for hard rain situations which is spelled out in the manual that it will not engage in those situations) since this work was done. I currently have about 1700 miles driven since this repair but given how long the retainer clip seemed to work (1500 miles) I do not feel that I am in the clear.

UtahK, in your situation, if they haven't tried the brake pedal sensor then this may be a place to look. They have diagnostics that they can do to determine if the sensor is operating correctly.
