Install a resistor in the air temperature sensor (wrap each end around one of the two prongs) to artificiall raise the outside air temp readings above the ERDTT set point. Gen 1 owners have been using this workaround for many years. One of our member also sells a premade sensor on ebay that does this.

bjrosen, no offense man but you really should do a search before posting. This question has been asked and answered every fall/winter since the cars came out.

I did do a search but it wasn't clear that the answers applies to the Gen 2. One article said that you could change the threshold from 35 to 15 but I couldn't find that in the settings so I assumed they were talking about the Gen 1. Is there a threshold setting for the Gen 2 and if so which menu is it located under?

Another question about this. The engine is much noisier under these conditions than under normal conditions, is that normal?

Yes there is a threshold setting. I don't have a Gen 2, but I do have a PDF of the owner's manual and found the instructions in a few minutes in the Personalization section.

Here it is directly from the 2017 manual page 143.

Engine Assist Heat
If equipped, this feature selects the
outside temperature level at which
the engine may run to assist heating
in Electric Mode. A change in
selection will not take effect until
after the vehicle is first
powered down.
Select On for temperatures below
approximately 2 °C (35 °F), or select
Deferred for temperatures below
approximately −10 °C (15 °F).

For Gen 2:
Home>Settings>Vehicle>Climate and Air Quality>Engine Assist Heat>Deferred (15deg).

I can not explain why both my '15 and '17 started ERDTT at 34 deg this week. I always set to 15 deg and they both reset somehow. Probably reset when it went to the dealer for service.
Bad enough I had to fiddle thru the settings, then I had to stop the car, turn off, then on. Then turn off the next setting "Engine Assist Heat Plugged In" since I pre-condition in the garage and don't want the engine running.

And every time this is asked, I have to chime in that I find the higher temp setting to give my commute better EV range than the lower setting. I know it's counter intuitive, but avoiding resistive heat is better than forcing it. Then there are those who don a full body snow mobile outfit to avoid using heat. My commute is guaranteed to hit the Dino juice so I'm operating completely differently than someone who's round trip is completely within their EV range. It would be nice if GM built-in an ERDTT override for just those situations.

Yes it really depends on personal situation. I tried ERDTT at 35° and it did give me better EV range over the lower setting (duh, it wouldn't be running if set at the lower setting!). But the constant cycling of the engine was annoying, especially since I didn't need it for my commute. Now I have a part-time job and can plug in at work. The car has enough EV range to get me to work in 20° weather with heat on. Full charge at work then home, no gas. So for me, Very Cold is the best choice.

Wouldn't you get the same result by engaging hold mode for a few minutes?

With the heated seats and steering wheel it's not necessary to use the heater at 35 so I've now set the heat assist to Deferred (which is a stupid way to say 15, why did they have to obscure what it does by saying On or Deferred instead of 35 and 15). I would much rather they just had an engine assist button that you could press when you wanted it. The Precondition button in the MyChevrolet app heats up the car while it's plugged in, I've found that if you precondition the car then the engine doesn't start when you get in. The OnStar app still calls it remote start which isn't accurate because you aren't starting the car just using wall current to heat it (assuming you've set engine heat assist when plugged in to off). BTW with this car the Remote Start function is finally useful. When I bought my Concorde in 1994 the dealer tried to sell it to me and I said "who am I, Michael Corelone? why do I need remote start?", when I bought my 300C in 2005 and they tried to sell it to me I said, "who am I, Tony Soprano?, why do I need remote start?", but with this car that's always plugged when it does make sense to remotely turn on the heater. Unfortunately even if I was Michael Corleone or Tony Soprano remote starting the car wouldn't protect me because it's parked right outside of my bedroom window.

It's one less thing that needs to be changed when the display Units move from US to Metric, and it's possible that the configure-settings program doesn't have access to the live value of the Units setting anyway. (Conventional programming paradigms fail when you're dealing with a dozen independent modules that communicate via a broadcast buss. It gets a little weird sometimes.)

Yes. that's true for people that have commutes exceeding the all-electric range of the Volt, but false for anyone who could make it all on battery without the ERDTT setting.

So to each his own, and no one approach maximizes electric operation. Oh the pains we suffer having a vehicle that uses so little gasoline. ;)

Yes, this would be best. The claim is that there's some dated defrosting rules that require use of the engine at times. I don't really buy it, but that's what we've been told.

I would prefer a message similar to fuel maintenance mode on the center screen:
"It is below freezing outside, would you like to use the engine intermittently to help defrost quicker and heat the cabin faster? Yes/No"
and maybe with a count-down to use it automatically if you don't answer in a certain amount of time (to meet whatever requirements of the FMVSS referenced above)

I already use hold mode to help warm the cabin and save battery power for city vs. interstate driving. But when in normal mode, I still use the higher erdtt temp setting. The only time I lower this setting is when I'm doing short trips and am attempting to avoid erdtt. I guess sometimes I would like to be able to disable it, but it would be less than 1 out of 20 trips.

Sweet. Nice plug! ;) (Sorry, I had to.)
I installed this. Like it. It got so cold here today -28F actual temp that ERDTT still kicked in even with the hack. My drive was only 7 miles so I could have done without but this is the first ERDTT in 2 years for me so not to disappointed.
