Not an encouraging first post but here goes.

I have a 2017 Volt Premier (loaded) with 1000km. Driving home from work today I loose all power steering and I get an error message indicating that the power steering needs to be serviced and a suggestion I drive carefully...

After much run around by GM Canada the car is being towed to the closet dealer for service (not the dealer I purchased from). Has anyone else experienced a similar issue and what exactly does the repair/service entail?

I had the same thing last week on my 2017 Volt premier. Lost power steering, so I stopped and turned off the power and restarted hoping that the power steering would come back. It didn't come back so I drove home and called my dealer and they asked if I wanted it towed. I declined and said I would drive the volt to the dealer. When I started the volt the power steering was OK. Seems that you have to wait 5-10 Min. and the power steering would reset. Not had any more issues with the power steering since and I just came back from a trip about 1200 kilos. Keep us updated how things turn out.

It's great that the issue isn't permanent but I would still make sure this all gets fixed and reported to GM. Shouldn't be happening obviously.

How manageable was the car without power steering?

How manageable was the car without power steering?
It was very very hard to turn. Luckily I was not far from my home when the power steering went out. If it does happen again, I will pull over to a safe location, power off the car, wait 10 min, and restart. I will call GM Volt adviser and get this incident documented and if he knows why this happens. GM needs to find out the reason and issue a repair bulletin/recall.

Will/Shouldn't this kind of event trigger some codes the dealer/GM can pull to see what's going on.

Back from the dealer and I have attached a copy of the work order. I drove the car for about an hour after picking it up and it seems different...in a good way. Lane assist now appears to tightens up the steering to maintain the lane whereas before it would just correct and bounce lane line to lane line.

Is there a resource that documents the changes in each software release and a way to be notified of software updates as they roll out?

Thanks for the update and posting the report. I wrote off lane keep assist LKA and haven't used it at all since the first week or so of ownership as it just ping ponged as you note. If this reprogram makes it actually usable, really keeps the car centered in the lane then I'm interested in getting it applied as well.

Keep us posted if you use LKA and see it continuing to work as you would hope/like.

Hmmmm? I'm also interested in this information. Thank you Lixy for the update... I too, like Kraven, have found the lane assist too much "zigged-zagged" and disabled it since... I've read in these forums, that it is mostly what it does..

Cheers

I just had this same steering problem. Dealer wouldn't cover it even though i only have 28k miles on the car . I was about 5 weeks past the 36 months. Thoroughly pissed off. But i'm starting to read about the same exact problem from a few people, I wonder if this could lead to another class action suit?

Anyone else experience this power steering issue?

I too experienced this loss of power steering on my 2016. It would happen when turning the wheel hard to left or right at slow speed such as pulling out from behind a parked car or turning into a parking spot. I would hear a "clunk" sound and no more PS. It always fixed itself after sitting for a few minutes shut off. After about the 6th time it happened to me I took it to my dealer. They replaced the steering gear at a cost of $2300.00. Luckily, I had an extended warranty and only had to pay the deductible. It took them 4 weeks to fix it but they gave me a loaner (2019 Colorado). No problems since.

Sorry to comment on such an old thread, but I have the same problem, triggered mostly when parking.

I have exactly this issue. It is hard to believe that there is no service bulletin about this, so many years later. Whether or not it's covered, it seems important to guide repairs...
