I have been browsing this forum to see if anyone else is having this problem. There are other Volt owners who have noticed a burning odor when the ICE is running and the heat is on, but it seems that for most of the people having this issue, it is only temporary, and the smell goes away after the substance causing the odor burns off. I have a 2017 Gen 2 Volt with 14K miles on it and the burning odor is still very strong when the ICE is running and the heater is on. It has been at the dealer for the last two days, and they do not seem to know what the problem is. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I remember mine doing that very occasionally when it only had a couple thousand miles on it...how many gas miles do you have on it?

I get the burning smell as well. It's got 5k on it now and I am going to take it in as it gets 10 to 20 miles of ice use every day. Seems to be worse if I use the ice and then regen. With so much ice use everything should be burned off by now.
My usual burning smell happens after I run out of battery on the drive home, so 10-20 miles of 65-75 mph, 1500 ft of climb then hit regen from 65 mph. It then smells really hot. If I check coolant temp it's about 195deg.

Does the stock filter not have carbon in it?

No, the stock filter is a HEPA filter but does not have active carbon mixed in it.

I am having the same issue. In my case I get the smell after I switch from Hold mode to normal mode Good to know GM is looking for a solution.

We have a 1500 foot climb at 55-60 MPH for the last five miles home.

Even after 1500 miles of gasoline engine use, there is a definite overheating/burning smell at the end of that climb.

Interesting thread as my new to me 2017 did the same thing to me today. I was on ICE since the battery depleted and had the temp inside to 74 degrees. I guess that would kick in heater as it's about 60 outside. I looked under the car and couldn't see anything burning but if you open the hood to get the engine running, you can def smell it under the hood. Going to look into that engine cover foam issue.

Will also get a carbon cabin filter and see if that helps us breathe with the windows up

My experience is if the ice hasn’t been run hard in a while the smell is it is burning off some kind of oil deposits or similar on or in the engine. It goes away after about a half hour.

Thanks for the tip about foam insulation possibly being deformed. If it happens again I’ll check that.

Ok, cabin air filter replaced. FYI, 5 screws to remove the glovebox, you'll need to unsnap the side cover to get to one screw. Also, verified my engine foam piece was seated correctly. Let's see how it goes.

I experienced this similar issue and resolved it by replacing the oil filler cap on my 2014.
The part number is 25192632.
It maybe worth a try for $20.

The smell is really strong on my 2018, but I've only used the ICE for around 400 miles (~9 gallons). I'm wondering if it'll ever go away with how little I use the ICE (~95% EV only so far).

My experience is similar. If you need to run the ice continuously for more than 30 mins if you hardly ever use it I think you may smell it occasionally then it goes away.

I really doubt OEM is HEPA filter. Are you sure? I couldn't find a HEPA filter available for Volt.

Roads are not very clean, the material worn off from tires ends up in the engine bay and in our lungs. Dust on the engine burns when it runs. Air intake is right by the driver side windshield. Hood seal is probably not great and air in the engine bay leaks into the intake, bad design. Washing the engine bay once in a while (every 2-3 years) should temporarily help.

Check for a sloppy oil change. In an ICE vehicle any spilled oil burns off rapidly. In the Volt not so much.
