I drove the car this morning, came back home and put it on the 240v charger with the battery at 0 miles EV. at about 22 miles of EV, I got an email alert saying the car stop charging. I tried to re-plug the charger and it click on and then clicked off again, worth mentioning that I thought I briefly smelled an electrical burning smell. I tried the 120v charger and it did not work at all. I noticed the CEL on so I called on-star, and I have a code of "Electrical system not performing as expected". And was advised to take it to the dealer on monday (this being a weekend).

Anybody seen this before?

That's not a code, that's a description. Call them back and get the actual alphanumeric error codes.

Sorry you've experienced a problem. Pain for sure. We've seen a lot of CELs. Most just resolve and many are due to EVSE compatibility issues. Did you by chance use a different charger such as a public charger? It may be something more serious but usually the dealer clears the codes and can't find anything.

After about 1 hr, i tried to plug it in and it is charging again. I took it out for 20 mile errand and am now currently charging at home.

The only public charger I use is at wholefoods where they let you charge for free and never had a problem. I also plug in 120v sometimes.

The CEL is still on and the car runs fine otherwise.

If you charged shortly before the CEL I'd think it was a charging issue, though that could also occur at home (not common). Usually it takes a few charging cycles for the CEL to disappear. If the CEL doesn't drive you insane and you'd like to avoid a dealer visit, waiting a while is a option. Not sure what MY you have but there was a software fix for this at one point.

You still need to go get the code before it clears to make it easier to track the problem in the future.

PLUS : remember Steverino will be watching ;-)

Update to the issue, after driving it around some more the CEL cleared and the car completely charged over night with 240v. My best guess was that my wife didn't fully plug the charger in and the car didn't like it and the CEL came on. I left it unplugged for about an hour and replugged it back in with success. And later the CEL went off.

OP here. this is now a recurring problem, symptoms include:
1. Charging interrupts
2. car switching from battery to gas even with ev range left (22 miles on one occasion)
3. loss of air conditioning when above happens
4. check engine light comes on, code is P1A3C battery not performing at optimum
5. when car is started and put into drive after being parked, car has no propulsion and message on dash reads return to park. several restarts will finally allow propulsion in gas mode.

Took the car to dealer and they replace a battery control module. a week later the car did the above symptoms again. Car is currently at the dealer and a portion of the battery is being replaced.

I will continue to update this post until problem is resolved.

sailomb, thank you for keeping us up-to-date. This is an invaluable learning experience that we are fortunate to glean from. Here's hoping this is your last and final repair.

Just got the car back. Has already fully charged twice without issue. Ran all battery on interstate once so far without issue. So time will tell. It was a open battery cell and the service dept replace a portion of the battery. Hopefully this was it. As a side not I got 3 recalls done, one to fix the chuggle, one to fix a seat adjuster issue and one to reprogram the power inverter.
