I was out this morning doing some shopping and when I got back in the car and started it, noticed instrument panel was completely dead. Normal warning lights came on for a second during startup, but nothing else. Infotainment system was normal. Car drove normally

Did a few restarts with no change. I drove home ( luckily only a few miles) like that.

After getting out of the car, locking and unlocking the car ( thinks it's some sort of soft reset) everything went back to normal. Not sure what is going on, first time anything weird like that happening. Suppose I could have possibly done a bad start button push (i.e. Double tap)? Maybe it's IP address got confused?


Anybody else have an experience like that?

My 2012’s instrument cluster did this on-off dance for a while then went blank, never to return. Dealer replaced the instrument cluster for ~$900 since I was out of warranty. If you can get it to the dealer while it is not working, don’t wait. Get it replaced while you are still under warranty.

They told me that it will cost about $900 to fix.

Seems you are not alone although this Instrument Panel Gage Cluster for the Gen1 can be bought for much cheaper on ebay...

I checked the fuse panel in the car, the panel that supplies power to this instrument panel and many other items. I was able to push in every small plastic fuse a little bit, and I could hear and feel it move. Movement was only about 1/2- 3/4mm but who knows how sensitive this stuff is. Not sure if it was like that from factory, or the fuses backed out a bit over time.

Curious to see if anyone else noticed this about the fuses and if they have had a blank screen issue

There were similar reports with the ELR 2014, most were resolved by disconnecting the 12 V battery for 2 minutes, good luck!!!.

As STEVERINO will say be sure the 12 volts battery is in good shape and clean tight connected... My 2014 Volt did it once and "self fixed " itself, that was 3 yrs ago, a the day after a long hot day trip, I suspect was the 12 V battery low, I charged it for a couple of hrs and no problems since then...I have being charging the VOLT WITH 120 V 8 AMP, ON PURPOSE(I have the 240V charger), so the small 12v battery gets charged at least 8 hrs every night, with the 240 V only will be charged for 3-4 hrs max, I know that probably is non relevant, but slow continous charge has to be better then shorter charging times.

As Volt Spain points out, issues with the 12V battery or it's connections can manifest as dash/center console gremlins (weird stuff, bizarre behavior). Can't hurt to check the 12V cables. We saw some of this even with the 12V cables at the jump block under the front hood when one of the cable connection tabs was installed slightly crooked.

Also, a loose connector for the console could cause an issue, like a TV cord not being plugged in all the way.

And then sometimes, it's just a computer flake out where the screen goes out and comes back on (sometimes just turning off the car and restarting is all it takes) never to be seen again.

However if it persists, disconnect the 12V battery and then reconnect to "reboot" the system.

If that does not do it or it happens again, take it to the dealer.

Had center display lock-up last night (only displays blue volt insignia), and no buttons changed anything. Tried 'restarting' car (going into park, hitting power button to turn off, then hitting again to power on) with no change.

Confirming the "soft reset" really needs to be the following to get it back:
1. power off car (keep key/fob with you)
2. get out of car
3. lock car
4. unlock car
5. get in car
6. power on car

I am curious if that procedure would do a reset for the old nav system lock when onstar directions are sent.

( sometimes it takes a 10 minute walk session to get it back. )

I have the same problem with volt 2012, I notice that when my car cold it happen are often, every morning in my garage the cluster is working. when I leave the office since 5 days the cluster is blank and the car is connecter on a 240 v changer at the office too.

Could it be related to the temperature?

this happened to me also after a bad start, double tap, my screen is dead now too. I think it has to do with the in rush current.
