Hello:

This is the first time after 2 new Volts that my car went into a "Maintenance" mode to use up all the old fuel. The fuel is over 1 year old.

I am down to 2 bars. Will the maintenance mode make it stay on gas until it is all used up. When can I add fuel?

I cannot get any answer at all from the GM people who were transferred to me from OnStar. The lady did not understand much English or my question. She was supposed to call me back but never did.

What happened to the Chevrolet Volt advisors?

You can add fresh fuel at any time. However, if you have 2 gallons of old and add 2 gallons of fresh, you will change the average age of all the gas to 6 months. Triggering the next Fuel Maintenance Mode in 6 months. Many of us that do not use much (any) gas will let it burn up almost all of the old fuel then only add about 2-3 gallons of fresh. This will give you the longest window until the next forced FMM and, when it does come, you will only have to burn 2-3 gallons.

Time to RTFM (and pay attention to the parts I bolded):
"If low engine usage causes average fuel age to exceed approximately one year, FMM will run the engine to use up the old fuel. The engine will run until enough fresh fuel is added to bring the average fuel age into an acceptable range. Allowing more old fuel to be used up by FMM and adding a larger amount of fresh fuel will maximize the length of time before another fuel maintenance mode is needed. During FMM the engine may turn on and off.

When FMM is needed, the FMM Request screen appears on the center stack display at vehicle start.

If Yes is selected, FMM will begin. The engine will not start until after a short delay once shifted into D (Drive). FMM will automatically continue at each vehicle start until fresh fuel is added.

If No is selected, the FMM Request screen will appear when the vehicle is next started. The FMM request can be delayed for only one day.
"

Other threads have said that it appears that slightly less than 2 gallons of new gas is sufficient for the car to recalculate the age of the fuel, as TSquare has described. I intend to do just that, before my current tank ages out sometime in late fall, if I don't burn it all before then. You say you're at 2 bars on the gas gauge, so 2 gallons should easily give you another 6 months.

AFTER DAYS of the low fuel alarm -trying to get that last Gal used up - many just add gas and have done with it.
