2016 Artificial Noise Generator Module

I was just reading around and happened upon the law that will be in effect as of 2018 requiring EVs and hybrids to produce artificial noise. I knew it was going to be mandated eventually but I didn't realize it was going to be so soon...

I personally hate the noise the Volt makes (I can hear it clearly inside the vehicle unless my radio is on), and pulled the Pedestrian Protection fuse to disable it because I'm always careful around pedestrians anyways (and have driven a hybrid ever since I got my learner's permit 7+ years ago, so I'm used to people not being able to hear my vehicle).

I'm curious as to whether or not it would be possible to modify or replace the noise generator module to change the noise it produces. The current one sounds like a small blender running a small distance away and the sound repeats about every 2 seconds, which drives me insane if I have to listen to it for any extended period of time (such as at a red light). I'd prefer some sort of higher-pitched electronic sound that doesn't sound like a cheap WAV file repeating over and over.

I'd imagine if there's one fuse that disables that noise and the external "ping" sound, it's probably a fairly simple module with relatively few inputs and could probably be mimicked by something like an Arduino with a sound chip on it.

Has anyone ever tried to find this module and reverse engineer it yet?

You can turn the volume of that start up / shut down sound up or down or totally off if you adjust the rotary volume knob while the sound is playing.
Thanks, I don't mind some audible cue just the one GM supplied us with.
I wasn't asking how to turn off that space age swooing sound..
I was asking about how to turn off that flaky little squeaky motor sound, the Volt makes at slow speeds. Either turn it off or change the chip to the sound of a good sounding car.

The sound of a squeaky water pump, while you sit at an intersection, is almost an embarrassment. Can the chip be changed or written over? Does anybody know how this is done?

Oh, that sound is what I refer to as the 1950s sci-fi movie flying saucer sound effect. To kill that sound you need to remove a fuse from the rear fuse panel. Fuse F5 - Pedestrian protection. Refer to pages 270-271 of the 2017 Volt Owner's Manual.

Yes, removing the fuse is easy, but it leaves the Volt silent. Do you know where one might look to find a replacement chip seller to replace the squeaky sound with something more appropriate, then replace the fuse for power?

No I don't know of any way to change the volume or the sound effect in the Gen 2 Volt. The pedestrian protection sound effect was updated, is a different sound, in the 2019 Volt. Also, the 2019 adds a second audio driver (speaker?) in the rear of the Volt for the pedestrian protection sound. I'm not sure if both the front and rear audio drivers are active at the same time or if the rear driver is only when backing up.
Rear is only while in R. And it is louder in cabin by alot than forward speaker. An undocumented '19 change not in the sales lit.

This is consistent with my 2019 experiences. It's annoyingly loud in reverse, probably to compensate for the fact that "less careful" drivers may not be looking behind them (or using the back-up camera) when driving in reverse. The Nanny State strikes again.

I just watched that YouTube video demonstrating pulling the F5 fuse. So I'm rather grateful that the sound made by the 2019 is more like a group of tiny angels harmonizing, and less like some mechanical component fixin' to kick the bucket. Yikes, that was early gen-2 noise was harsh.

Changing out components isn't really my thing, but man did I ever laugh at this! Nice work! Who doesn't love the Jetsons??!?

Are you selling this yet?
I asked him on Instagram and he said he will upload the code to github when it's done.

Marketing something like this would be risky. If someone buys his new sound generator and then runs over a pedestrian, then then the victim's family's lawyers could go after the him.

Same goes for removing the fuse. I suggest that instead of removing the fuse you all disable the alert sound by swapping in a burned out fuse so you have plausible deniability.

Or better yet, just leave the fuse in so a deaf pedestrian doesn't walk in front of your moving Volt.

That's only for Gen1 Volts. On Gen2 there is an option under Settings --> Radio that's helpfully called "Audio Cue Volume." Set that to zero to disable the cheesy swoosh startup sound.

I, too, am interested in this project if it ever comes to GitHUB...
Couldn’t you connect the power to the speaker box to a relay that is normally closed then power the relay via something ignition powered? That way power is cut to the device when the ignition is on but when you turn it off power is restored so it would chirp?
I know that this is older thread, but new to volts and thought I would add this electric diagram:

Thanks to this thread, I pulled the F5 fuse labeled "pedestrian pro" on my 2017 volt. I wasn't sure I heard anything before but it's definitely quieter now when going down the road. I only hear the AC fan running this morning.

Now entering stealth mode for mowing down pedestrians. :ROFLMAO:
I pulled the F5 fuse in the rear and I still hear a faint whining sound ramping up and down depending on acceleration and deceleration.

Oh and please let me know when someone figures out how to change the sound. I’d like for my Volt to sound like a Tie Fighter screeching down the road.😁
