I was thinking about taking advantage of the OnStar hands free calling feature in my 2015 Volt. Sometimes I forget my phone at home or leave it somewhere and thought it would be nice to have it as a backup. So I push the OnStar button and ask the nice lady about buying some minutes. She said I could get 30 minutes for $13.95, plus tax and fees. I asked how much for 60 minutes and she said there is no 60 minutes available and the next package would be 100 minutes for $39.95. So I opted for the 30 minutes which she said would be good for a year. My card was charged $16.15 and I tested it by calling my cell phone and it worked fine.
On my way to work today, I got an incoming call voice notification. Thinking it was OnStar, I answered it. Turned out to be a telemarketer with Allied Vehicle Protection trying to sell me an extended warranty. So I hung up and drove to work. Later, I get back into the car to grab some lunch at a drive through. Another incoming call, and I don't recognize the number so I hit the hang up button.
Time to call OnStar so I push the button and ask the lady if they are selling our car's phone number to telemarketers now, and that when I answer these calls, my minutes go down. She said no, the telemarketers just call random numbers. So they called me at random TWICE in one day? I don't think so. So she transferred me to someone in the tech department. She agreed to change the phone number and give me 10 free minutes. The new number is way different from the old one, but only time will tell if the change did any good. And of course I found out that if the call is outgoing or incoming, you lose minutes either way. Unless you don't answer. Which I won't.
