Back on July 25, my 2015 went into FMM. This surprised me, since I just added 2 gallons on St. Patrick’s Day to end the last FMM session. And then a few days later I started getting Fuel Low warnings both on the app and on the screens. They sure don’t want you to forget. I was trying to go as far as I could to burn off as much of the old gas as I could, but today I chickened out and put in $10 worth of V-power which came out to 2.3 gallons. Is this going to last me a year or just a few months?

Wild guess, your next FMM is around the start of May 2023, ~9 months from now.

Let’s say the interval from St Patrick’s Day in March to July 25 is ~4 months.

Math suggests you added 2 gallons in March to an existing 4 gallons in the tank.

On that day: 2 units of 0 month old gas plus 4 units of 12 month old gas = (2 x 0) + (4 x 12) = 48 months/6 units of gas = average age 8 months in March... so 4 months later, July, next FMM.

Today showing: One bar lit on the gas pump icon, last 10% of the 9.3 gallon tank, low range, app shows 35 miles. Let’s call it ~0.75 gallons left in the tank.

So after putting in 2.3 gallons: 2.3 units of 0 month old gas plus 0.75 units of 12 month old gas = (2.3 x 0) + (0.75 x 12) = 9 months / 3.05 units of gas = average age ~3 months as of ~August 1... so next FMM in 9 months, or around the start of May 2023.

So, by not wanting to end the FMM by driving until the tank is empty (computer shuts down the engine and shifts back to battery power while there is still a wee bit of gas remaining in the lines, so you’re not really sucking the dregs out of the bottom of the tank), you’ve been able to experience TWO FMMs in one calendar year! Congrats?

Looks like you had about 0.8 gal left and added 2.3... my best guess would be you are good for 2.3/3.1 = ~2/3 of a year?

Looks like you guys are in agreement that my next FMM will be about 9 months from now. On St. Patrick’s Day I needed to take my son to the airport and the estimated range was showing 80 miles but the round trip would have been 140, so I added the 2 gallons, which canceled FMM. This time, after watching that LOW for a week, I feared I would see Propulsion Power Reduced, Engine Not Available, two messages I’ve never experienced. But it would have been fine, I’m sure. I still had plenty of EV miles left to make it to a pump.

Indeed, if during an FMM you drive far enough to "run out of gas" (and have some charge in the battery) the Engine Not Available message will pop up, and the Propulsion Power will be Reduced, but you will again have access to the charge in the battery to use for driving to the gas station... (where, after you do add gas because the tank ran out, the engine will run at first when you restart the car... don’t panic, it’s not an incomplete FMM, but rather as it says in the manual, it’s just the system running a self-test when the car is first started, and if the self-test finds nothing wrong, the engine shuts off and you use the battery in the normal way).
