2015 Diagnostic Prior to Purchase

Considering buying a 2015. There are no messages on the display. Any advantage to having a mobile service run a diagnostic on it? Some have told me IF the car isn't displaying any sort of message then the diagnostic would be a waste of money.

Any opinions out there?

Thanks very much,
Jeff

A pre-purchase inspection is never a waste of money. Particularly considering you're spending $1,000's on something you expect should last a few years at a minimum. I'm unsure how mobile services work, but I chose to take mine into a Chevrolet dealership and have one of their technicians inspect mine before purchase. I would recommend an appointment since it can take a couple hours but they do inspect the car including computer diagnostics, and mechanical inspections including checking the drive train, suspension, brakes, etc.

The car does provide a lot of information through is seemingly endless list of driver warnings but it can't inform you of worn items such as suspension components, odd tire wear, seizing caliper slides, etc. This can only be seen through a visual check and can turn into costly repairs if left too long. Hope that helps.

The battery on these seems to be incredibly robust. I bought my '13 in late '16 with 93K miles, and currently have just shy of 160K with no perceptible loss in range. I saw 40 actual miles/charge during summer this year, and many on here have far more mileage. Bear in mind that the Volt included an incredibly long warranty for the battery (10/150K or 10/150K for CARB compliant). You should be good a few more years of warranty coverage, the current mileage might shorten that period however.
