Has anyone heard this before?

That the "old" 2012 charging cord will not work with the 2014 Volt, that it's not compatible?

The only thing I can associate this with is the 8A-12A switch on the old EVSE and the current insistence of the car on setting 8 or 12 amps for charging. Is there something else that would cause incompatibility?

I was told this last night when I asked GM via the phone number in the warranty section of the GM website about the warranty associated with the 2012 charging cord. The third person I ended up speaking with was a Volt specialist, who had never been asked the question before.

I never did get the simple simple answer I was looking for and I don't see the charging cord mentioned, one way or another in the 2012 manual or the separate warranty booklet.

What I was told is "talk to your dealer". This is the same answer I received through various conversations with the regional Volt Advisor I was put into contact with (thanks Katie!).

So, I am off to the dealership service department, dead circa 2012 EVSE in hand, to see what happens.

I've charged a 2013 loaner with my 2012 OEM EVSE with no issues. I did need to select the 12 amp charge rate on the center console each time.

Ditto. I charge my 13 off the 12, and the 12 off the 13. No biggie.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. The 2012 EVSE is different (8/12A switch) but otherwise is identical in that it conforms to the SAE J1772 standard and should power up anything with the same connector and conforming electrical wiring.

Hey Voltmeister,

All Voltec couplings, regardless of the year, should work with any model year Volt. If you are experiencing trouble charging, I suggest you make a visit to your dealership. I realize that isn't the most thrilling answer, but it's the best!

sorry this in not true, the standard is just that, a standard. the car interrogates the EVSE device and asks what current the device can provide, then draws as much at can itself, up to the device limit. so the 8/12 switch on the EVSE (charge cord) is no different to the car than any base EVSE which has only one upper limit (there are a long list of upper EVSE current limits, from 6 to 60 in small increments) some home built EVSE's have a selectable current feed limit, and some commercial EVSEs are supply side current limited with the limits tied into variable billing rates.

The part number may be different, so, from a dealer perspective they are not 'the same'.

However, ANY J1772 EVSE will work with ANY EV using that standard. Basically any EV other than Tesla which uses a proprietary Tesla EVSE.

I was given a 2012 Voltec EVSE when I had my 2012 PiP and the cable wouldn't allow the PiP to charge. I traded the PiP in on a 2014 Volt and kept the 2012 Voltec and I'm glad I did 'cause I now have a spare EVSE.
