We have 11,000+ members here... if only 10% will go for this, It could be great... I have read many posts, and we are not short of people with great titles, like engineers, designers and retired people from big industries, So I am sure someone here should be able to run with this idea...

Lets use a site like Kickstarter or such site to design and build our own window vent deflctors, as based on our many requests to the people that actually made them (and sponsor this site but do not sell them...but they do sell a Sun Roof deflector), we are not going to get them, either because it will not make them money...or because of your cars, they cant just modify an existing design to just fit (and we know, that will mean, they will probably look cheap and bad)

I have seen some GMC trucks that have some in-channel types that are flush with the body, yes, the trucks have a bit more space from the glass to the body, but we are not talking inches...more like mm.

So, I suggest using Kickstater, as whoever has access to prototyping equipment and the tools and CAD equipment to design these, will be able to figure out what will be needed for a run and then figure a price.

I did not come to this idea just for the hell of it, in all my cars in the past 20+ years I always had window visors, I always liked the idea of driving down the road in fall/spring with fresh air minus the "hurricane" winds.

This week I did a proof of concept, I used tape (Yes, regular packing tape) and I covered 2 inches (same as the visor will cover) of all 4 windows, with curve and all... then I drove around at night 71 degrees outside (Not having anyone see my tape covered car) so have less noise and less cars... 30mph... slight breeze, 40mph you can start to feel it, good cool sensation...at 50-55 it was very nice inside the car, road noise was not bad (much better than with windows open at same, and less wind...specially that low frequency noise our cars make sometimes when back windows are open) I could not tell you how good it will be over 55mph because the tape started to make a loud flapping sound, so test stopped there, but only because the tape is so thin.

Basically, ours should be made in-channel type, to match the contours of the window edge and maybe go above 2-3mm max to prevent any road noise that might make them crap.

I would love to have these while driving around...instead of having the windows open. Also, yes I know a piece of plastic is not the best safety device, but with these, you can have your windows a bit cracked open in very hot days.

Ok, before I get chastised about how our cars do not need it or how bad it will be and I will loose a whole one mile or two of my commute, or how ugly they will be...give me a chance here and read my idea...

This post is for people that would like to have them, I welcome constructive criticism, but if all you have to say is how ugly they are or how bad they are (specially if you never had them...or got some cheap ones from Ebay), respectfully, please keep those comments to yourself.

So now... anyone has the tools of means to do this?

The Cruze is not even close to match the Volt, the curve is larger and the rear windows are designed completely different. (also in the Cruze, due to the vertical bar in rear windows, make the wind deflectors useless as the window also opens on the side)

I was pointing out things to considier, a quality comparision, and decent description. I suspect they have a minimum number of cars manufactored to expected sales ratio before they consider making them. I live reasonably near this company but sounds like they design/engineer them in Germany.

WeatherTech® Side Window Deflectors offer you fresh air enjoyment with an original equipment look. They are crafted in Germany from the finest 3mm lightly-tinted acrylic material available. Installation is quick and easy, with no exterior tape needed. WeatherTech® Side Window Deflectors are precision-machined to perfectly fit your vehicle. These low profile window deflectors help to reduce wind noise and allow interior heat to escape. Also available in dark tint for most vehicles.

  • Maximize your fresh air enjoyment.
  • Optically transparent.
  • OEM quality.
  • Sleek aerodynamic styling.
  • Reduces wind noise.
  • Installs inside the window channel.
  • No unsightly exterior tape.
  • Minimizes interior heat when parked.
  • Helps keep side windows dry in the rain

I understand... I have seen AVS, EGR and Weathertec... they are basically the same... they are plenty of versions for popular cars on Ebay from Chinese companies that have lower quality and some no difference (the last ones I had on my 2011 Equinox were from Ebay and I paid $29 and it was no difference in quality I could see)
I had send emails to all 3...and never got more than the canned automated response, All 3 companies made them out of the same polycarbonate or acrylic depending on manufacturer.

Yes, most likely they will need a product that will produce volume sales... thats why I was hoping someone here has access or knowhow to make the prototype and then via kickstarter get the funds to make the molds and make them via crowd funding.

I use these on other vehicles too. It's great when parking in the hot sun, you can leave the windows cracked and not worry about rain coming in. Makes cool-down much easier, which I would think is kind of a big deal for the Volt with it's HVAC preconditioning... heck it would almost eliminate the need to precondition in many scenarios.

Does anyone have access to a 3-D printer? You could program the specs in and get them made that way. Paint them to the body color and they would look custom. Just a thought seeing how the major manufacturers do not appear to be interested.

Great idea. But you need more than a 3-D printer, you need a CAD drawing. For that you need precise measurements and someone to create the drawings from those specs.

Guess what everyone...interestingly enough, they sell them for the Ampera and the Euro Volt, I found a german website that sells them, but they will cost over $160 to have them shipped...
So I emailed them, and I was given a POC in the USA, that actually replied in a short time...guess what...is weathertech! ha!

here is the email traffic for you to enjoy...maybe contact them too...

Dear Mr. Andaluz,

It has come to my attention that you have interest in Side Window Deflectors for the Chevrolet Volt. I am happy to report that we are currently working on the development of these parts, testing will begin shortly. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask, otherwise I will be in touch once we have finished development.

Best Regards,

Good afternoon Justo,

I notified our product development team of your email and they have put in a request for samples from Germany. Once received, they will be test fitted here and if approved the parts will then be added to our system. This process can take several weeks, but I wanted you to be aware that it is in process.

Thanks,

Christine Regep

Christine,

I am part of a large group of Chevy Volt Owners and for a long time we have been trying to purchase wind deflectors for our cars, finally I found that they are available for the Ampera and the European Volt, both of those cars are identical to the US version with the exception of numbers, I tried to purchase them from the German site and I was given your contact information for the purchase. I did look at the Weathertech website, but it do not list the Chevy volt in a any year (11-13 models are identical)

Hopefully Ryan Granger (The last email, from Weathertech) is not blowing smoke...

The email has a bit of "canned" answer as you figure the test should have been done already as the Euro Volt is just that, the exact car we have...and even the Ampera, is just body panels different...

But lets hope in a few weeks we can see them on the weathertech website...now if they would do a group buy!

There is not enough demand for WeatherTech to make all weather floor mats for the Volt, but plenty for window deflectors? Seems a bit Topsy-turvey to me.

Weathertech makes their mats here I'm pretty sure. I'm betting they buy deflectors from this company and rebrand here, and that's the agreement. So the German/Swiss company may be making them for the Ampera anyway for sale in Europe and since that is done, Weathertech may import them for the Volt. Just a guess.

After an email with a few choice words... I got this as a reply...I get the feeling is a canned answer...but also, if we dont ask...we might not ever get them in the USA (They are available in Europe for the Volt and Ampera)

Here is a copy: We should fill this guy email with requests: [email protected]

Good afternoon Justo,

It is necessary for us to prioritize development of new parts using many factors. Customer satisfaction figures heavily in this, and the best way to satisfy the greatest amount of customer is to prioritize parts based on the largest number of requests. The Chevrolet Volt has not produced a large number of requests, however, development has been ongoing, and parts will be released for this vehicle sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2013. With regard to the deflectors specifically, we tested the currently available design and found it unsatisfactory. A revised design will be available as soon as possible.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

Best Regards,

Ryan

I would like a set of these too. But I also would like a set of the weathertech floor liners and cargo liner. Neither of which is available now. I have had them in my past cars and that cargo liner is great. It is made of a rubber like material that has a rounded up lip going all the way around it so if you spill something it stays right there in the liner and doesn't get to the carpet. The floor liners catch the snow off your boots or shoes and again, the melting snow, dirt and salt never gets to the carpet.
