I'm looking at getting a 2013 Chevy Volt, and so far love everything about it, except that bee stinger-like antenna. It's a minor thing, and not a showstopper.
But can I get rid of that in some way, and if I do, what then doesn't work so well, and are their ways to get them working better if it's gone?

It's trivial, I know, but something about it just bothers me.

The antenna itself screws onto the base. Some on this forum have replaced it with a stubby antenna. I don't remember what their results were.

That antenna is tuned to the several radio frequencies that GM vehicles use for AM, FM, 3G, and 4G communications (including OnStar), and maybe XM, too, if it was offered. If you put in a different antenna, the range will drop. Ask your dealer first before trying to swap or replace that antenna. Maybe a different antenna from anothe GM model will work, since GM is known to share parts between their models and across their lines.

GPS and MX are patch ant inside the base.

if it is working fine with a shorter ant --- YOU are not testing it right ;-)

I have used this antenna for the last 3 years on my 2014 Volt. http://www.juicedhybrid.com/Chevy-Volt-Shark-Fin-Antenna-s/2436.htm
For any Canadian members who are looking at this antenna, email Juicedhybrid first and let them know that you are interested. Paul from Juiced told me that the antenna is manufactured in Canada and he will only charge $10.50 USD for shipping. You order on-line and chose the expensive shipping, but after I let Paul know the order number, he only charged the card for the part cost plus the reduced shipping. We also get away from duty that way. I'm pretty impressed with this service. Looking forward to installing it.

Did the shark fin fit over the oem antenna base? Do you have XM or the capability? I have XM and love it. I don't want to lose the capability. If removing the stinger effects it.

Removing the stinger antenna will have ZERO affect on XM. XM uses a satellite antenna, the stinger antenna is only for AM/FM. And I removed my stinger in April and have noticed zero difference in any radio station XM or AM/FM.

Confirming the same. I got the same Stubby from Amazon. No issues with XM, OnStar or regular radio reception. It's likely there is some loss but not enough for me to notice. I definitely like the look (and ease of use with a car cover) of the shorter antenna.

I don't even have a replacement. I just removed the OE antenna and tossed it in my toolbox.

I bit the bullet and bought the shark fin instead of the stubby - https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/shares/bq5v1f
I also bought the Shark fin. It just arrived last week and the paint was a perfect match. An interest note: I also bought one for my Prius about 6 months ago. Also perfect paint match.
But I compared the two fins and discovered they are not the same shape. The Prius fin will fit over the Volt base without issue but for whatever reason the Volt fin has a narrower width and raised humps to give more clearance in the front area. The differences are subtle and if I hadn't had the other antenna to compare with, I doubt I would have noticed it. I have not installed either yet. Waiting for warmer weather for attaching the adhesive gasket.

I'm doing the opposite.
I am removing the shark fin on my gen 2 and adding a stick antenna from a cruze.
I don't like the fin, I prefer a stick.
