Heat was working fine then suddenly the fan cranked WAY up an nothing but cold air. I haven’t been able to get heat out of the car since then. Anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot beyond checking fuses?

Try OnStar for any trouble codes, or ask an auto store to read the codes with an ODB2 device.

I pulled the fuse to check it. Looked ok. Put it back in and heat works again. No clue why, but I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Somehow I posted this twice, ok three times if you include dutche’s heater thread too. Anywho, I pulled the fuse and examined it. Looked ok so I popped it back in. Like magic, the heat is working again. No clue why. But I won’t complain.

Software reset would be my guess. But if it happens again, there may be another issue.

Are you getting heat when the engine is operating? Also, in your drivers screen on the power usage page, are you seeing 3-6kW at "idle"? If you see anything above .5-1kW then your heater module is likely still working ok. There have been many heater issues with the Gen 1 ('13 in particular) which is fixed with a firmware update however there are also other simple items that may be at fault. One of those items includes a 3-way valve that separates the heater circuit from the rest of the coolant loop through the engine for EV mode. If this valve is stuck for ICE heater operation, it may not be circulating the hot water from the K10 heater (EV mode) to your heater core.

I would definitely try at least running in hold for several minutes to see if you get heat with the engine up to temp. If you do, it may be the 3-way valve stuck. I recently had to have mine replaced which was stuck in "EV" operation and blew ice cold when running the engine. It also apparently plugged some sort of inline filter. Cost for repair would have been about $300 but I had a GMPP that covered it.

There was no heat with hold or otherwise. It was blowing cold air. The power draw was in the vicinity of 4kw but no cold air. That’s why I was baffled. We’ll see if it’s still working today.

There is a firmware/software update for that.

Do firmware updates cost anything?

If you're out of B2B warranty, yes. In the case of a '13 it's almost certain you are out of the 3/36 warranty which covers software/firmware updates. Normally the charge is about $140 (~1 hour). It does sound like it definitely needs a trip to see the Volt doc.
