Yesterday my 2011 volt started making this really loud rumble/vibration noise when driving, sounded like it was coming from engine compartment right about where the passenger side meets the engine area. Could not really hear outside. First thought was motor mount.

This am I went out and it was gone, all better. Then a few hours later, as soon as the battery life ended and it switched to the engine, it started again.

So question, has anyone ever changed the motor mounts on a Gen 1 Volt? If so how hard is it? 20 years ago I was a mechanic in a Toyota dealership for 4 years, so i have experience, but it has also been a while and cars are getting tighter and tighter.

Also does anyone have a diagnostic page they can scan that shows exactly where the mounts are?

No, but if you go to the on line parts suppliers they have diagrams of it.

Back in the day, you could put the transmission in gear and torque the engine to find the bad mount, with the Volt, other than inspecting the mount, I have no idea on how to diagnose a bad one.

According to the diagrams there is one engine mount:

And two transmission mount:

ok so the one motor mount on the top passernger side looks damaged for sure. I got one from the dealership yesteray. Looking at the chilton repair manual it says I need to use a motor bar to hold the engine up, it goes across engine and it rests on the fenders.

I don't have one. Has anyone changed a motor mount? Can I just put a floor jack on bottom side to hold things up and change the mount?

Can you describe the damage? I did my water pump belt last weekend and took that mount off and put it back, it struck me as unusual, like perhaps a hydraulic mount that is fluid filled.

A few pics of the damaged mount would be good.

I hate to admit it but I haven't paid much attention to the engine since I bought the Volt. Today I popped the hood and listened to it run. Touching the engine cover I was surprised by how much it vibrates. Is that normal? That engine mount must get quite a workout because I barely feel any vibration inside the car.

I brought my Volt in for clicking and rumbling noise, dealer replaced both axles (for the clicking) and all 3 motor mounts, I assume that was for the rumbling. It's a 2013 with 94k miles on it. Luckily I had bumper to bumper warranty.

hi deano. How did you end up supporting the volt engine to change the motor mount? I need to remove the mount to change the water pump belt, to get to the crankshaft pulley seal.. but anyway, I was thiking I would just brace it by putting the jack under the transmission block.. can you share how you braced your engine??
