This past Saturday, being a really nice day, my wife and I went tooling around in our MY2012 Volt to the Mall. I think just about everyone else had the same idea since parking was at a premium. Not helping matters was that one whole section was closed for maintenance. As we looked for a spot, I spotted a sign for EV charging stations. I followed the arrows and came across 2 stations like in the picture below. There was already another crystal red volt parked in front of one and the other spot was empty.

Cable Technology Electronic device Electrical supply

I noticed the EVSE where the other Volt was parked had a red trouble light lit on it, and the cord for the other station was 1/2 pulled back to its corresponding station with the cord that was left on the ground leading right towards the other Volt. so I pulled in and plugged in. The connected light came on the EVSE display, but I got no charging activity led on the EVSE or on my volt. Even after pressing the Start button. Next to the EVSE was a service disconnect. I was able to power-cycle the EVSE. The lights went through a sequence, then came to the same state when I arrived. I plugged in again with no charge. So now I took a look at the one with the fault led. I was able to power-cycle that one too. The fault Led went away and assumed the same status as the first one. I cautiously plugged this one into my Volt. this too acted the same way, the connected led illuminated but I could not get charging to commence even after hitting the start button. I even tried stop, then start in case it was in a strange state.
Seeing there were 2 Volts and two of these EVSE's and from the way the cords were arranged, the other Volt owner tried as well. Is there a compatibility issue between our volts and the EVSE shown or could it be just 2 stations down. The red error led stayed out for the duration I was at the mall.

When I got home, my Volt charged normally as usual on my SPX level 2 charger.

Your Volt should be able to charge at any public Level 2 charging station. Are you certain that the charging station you tried did not require a PIN or a smart card to activate charging?

There were no slots keypads or mention of any type of smart card to run them. As you can see, from the picture, no mention of anything on them. Power present, ready to charge were lit, and whne I connected, the vehicle connect lit up. I could not get the vehicle charging led to light up.

Is the charging station listed in Plug Share, if so maybe other's have reported it as INOP, or maybe you can. Worth a shot to get their attention.

The EVSE units you attempted to use were probably defective. When I use amy smart card on the SemaConnect network I only need to wave the smart card close to to the display area of the EVSE. The SemaConnect network EVSE can also work with a phone app.
